All the superlatives have been used for a historic night. The absolute last thing anyone expected, most certainly the defending champions. And me. But now Villans have two weeks to enjoy a surreal 7-2 pasting of Liverpool to go second with a game in hand.
With only two matches played against struggling clubs, it’s hard to know whether or how much Villa are improved, but we’ve not yet seen the full impact of the summer’s business so far. However, Barkley is coming straight in, and Traoré is on the bench.
It looked like it was shaping up to be a night of frustration for Villa in their season opener, but Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa managed to combine off a corner to break through Sheffield’s defense and seal all three points for the home side. Oh, and some guy named Martinez saved a penalty.
After watching most everyone else already play two matches, Aston Villa finally join the 2020-21 campaign this evening against visiting Sheffield United. Chris Wilder is still a bit baffled by the Restart failure of goal-line technology, while Deano has given a tip of his hat to his late dad.
The window has started dragging on a bit, and frustration and anxiety are mounting among the Villa faithful. I think many expected us to hit the ground running when the window opened, but that was probably always a bit optimistic following Suso’s departure and Lange’s arrival.
