Aston Villa will be very happy with the start they have made to the campaign, picking up four points from a possible six so far and should rightly go into the game in buoyant fashion. They are one of only two teams who are yet to concede this season, and they will hope to extend their run of clean sheets to three games to ensure their second win from their opening three fixtures.

Aston Villa’s defensive solidity has provided the perfect foundation for them to pick up points in their first two games, and American shot stopper Brad Guzan has started the season in fine form with six saves across his two appearances. According to EA SPORTS Players Performance Index, the Villain’s centre backs have also been in fine form with Philippe Senderos completing 12 clearances, and Dutch international Ron Vlaar completing 16 clearances. Whilst Vlaar has won both of his two tackles in his opening two games, he has made as many interceptions and Senderos has made three interceptions which points to how well the pairing are reading the game.

At the other end of the pitch, Andreas Weimann has netted Villa’s only goal of the season so far, in their opening day victory against Stoke. He will be hoping to add to that tally this weekend. EA SPORTS Player Performance Index reveals that his finish against Stoke was the only shot that he has taken in two games, and getting more shots off could be the key to his success. He is a hard worker, making two interceptions and getting three crosses into the box for his teammates. He is 51/20 to score anytime with 888sport.com.

In the middle of the park, Villa will rely on Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph to win the battle of the engine rooms. EA SPORTS Player Performance Index shows us that the pair have covered more ground than anyone else in the squad so far, with Westwood covering 23.67km and Delph completing 21.95km in their opening two games of the season. Delph has completed seven of his eight dribbles so far this season and Westwood has completed 82.43% of his passes, both of which are more than anybody else in the Villa squad. They will need to use their drive and ball retention to conquer the Hull midfield come Sunday.

Hull have started the season sharply with four points from a possible six, whilst also having to juggle their squad due to European commitments. Hull responded quickly from the disappointment of losing the FA Cup Final to Arsenal with an opening day win away at QPR and will be looking to pick up their second consecutive away win to help maintain their position in the European places.

Much like Aston Villa, Hull’s good start to the season has been built on the solid backbone of a good defence. Hull’s shot stopper Allan McGregor has been in equally good form according to EA SPORTS Player Performance index, making seven saves in his first two games. James Chester and Curtis Davies have bolstered that defensive solidity with 14 and 23 clearances respectively, and Paul McShane deputising for the injured Alex Bruce has also made an impressive 19 clearances. James Chester has also added a further three blocks and three interceptions in his first two games, and it is crucial that the back three continue their strong start to the campaign to ensure victory.

Hull’s midfield star Tom Huddlestone has also has also impressed in his opening two games of the season, grabbing an assist already. EA SPORTS Player Performance Index also shows that he has won four of his five tackles, completed seven clearances, made two interceptions and also made two blocks. His work rate has been impeccable and he has covered 22.64km in his first two games; the second most ground covered by any Hull player. Hull’s other former Tottenham starlet Jake Livermore has completed 24.08km, and the pair will look to keep up their work rate to win the battle of the midfield.

Up top, Hull’s Nikica Jelavic will look to double his goal tally on the weekend after opening his account against Stoke last weekend. EA SPORTS Player Performance Index reveals that his finish against Stoke was in fact the only shot Jelavic has found the target with in his opening two games of the season. Jelavic’s three dribbles and three attempts on goal show his direct nature though and his hard work in completing 21.51km in his first two matches shows willingness to close down defenders. He is 31/10 to score anytime with 888sport.com.

  1. Villa’s and Hull’s only goals so far this season came from their only shots! Does that say something about the opposition defences or the poor attacking from each side. Could be last on MOTD2 again!

It’s time something off the pitch was sorted out – the sale of the club; then we could start looking forward instead of marking time. The season will soon roll on to May if we are not careful and the cost of relegation is high. I saw on the Football League show the cost to Norwich – turnover down from £100m to £50m and TV revenue down from £66m to £26m.

We need investment on a par with those clubs around us and I would suggest that new owners would have some intention of taking the club forward and investing. Look what King Power has done for Leicester – investment at the right level and managerial stability. With the right manager of course, before I get cries of LAMBERT OUT!

I will be watching with hope tonight.

I hope Mr Gough gets a rousing welcome at 1200 north stand car-park.

  2. Hull won’t have to do much to stop is from scoring. As long as a keeper plays, they won’t concede. We are shameful in the final 3rd, have been for a year now, but no changes from Mr Lamberk

Deadline day tomorrow. He better sort it out then

0-0 today. No shots on target

  3. I predict a dire 1-1, our goal will be a deflection off the referee and bounce ten times before going over the line. The crowd will then sing in unison “Paul Lambert’s claret and blue army” ( except Frem who will be hanging by his scarf from the Holte upper ), Lambert will do a lap of honour and announce he’s off to a bigger club.

Doubt whether Bent or Grealish will start.

See that Seb Blanco has signed for OLBYON and Ben Arfa is a target for the mealies, do we need a number 10 or what ?

  4. well done to mr Gough amazing fella. I’m setting some records myself, in waiting. its now nearly a year since I lent brasil, steamer, st75 £20 so if anyone wants to donate drop a £20 note in a card Thanks.
As villa fans we have collectively broke the not holding our breath record by some 30 years. I would like to see us dominate hull and smash them out of sight but I don’t want to let all you other record breakers down so I wontv hold my breath.

  5. Mark – we would be lucky to get Luis Arturo “El Matador” Hernández Carreón – he’s 46 and the highest scorer for Mexico.
I think Lerner has put a padlock on the vault for now and we will have to wait for new owner(s).

Like Steamer’s forecast – do we know who the ref is?

  6. Definitely rate Hernandez, great movement and lethal.

    Superbox,
For your own mental health, stay away, develop a cocaine habit or something, yer body might be knackered but at least yer marlies will function ok.

  7. wouldn’t this lad be worth a pop?

Manchester City forgotten man John Guidetti is in talks over a £2.5m move to Fiorentina.

The Sweden striker, 22, was in the sights of Dutch giants Ajax after a switch to Hannover broke down.

  8. Never say say,and all that guff……..but..surely GG will never become a Premier League player? On the bench as an unused sub for Brighton as they drew 2-2 with Charlton.Brighton were 0-2 down and he wasn`t brought on.I don`t pretend to know the circumstances of their set up,but he must have been fit to be named a sub.Puzzling and disappointing both. It`s one thing beating up Lambert for not playing him,but at Cov he played 4 times-I think-and now he can`t get a start at Brighton.I believe the lad is destined to be shunted around various clubs in the lower divisions.Much as I don`t want to believe it maybe he just isn`t good enough.Anyone who has watched him at various levels at AVFC,what do you make of this?

  9. Seamer

Yes about Ralph Coates etc.etc.Many,many good players are overlooked because of who they play for,and most are selected because of who they play for.Sorry, only just seen that post.
O`Shea,Wes Brown,Cleverly,Evans,, etc.-a different theme I know, but average or crepe players are protected and look reasonable when there is a core of good players around them.Keane,etc.The meeeejjaaaah would have us believe they are good/great players. When they move on the truth is revealed, thay are all wage thieves, living off the reflected glory of the playeres around them.In reality footy fans knew ,they were crepe before they moved, but the media brainwash yer armchair Sky fan,and spoonfeed `em this utter tosh.Present company excepted,of course.
Cleverly,I am sorry to say falls into this category.A £3M workaday midfielder, gives his all,a good short passer, not a game changer or matchwinner though. One of the many dozens of such players scuttling around the midfields of the EPL.So why pay a reported £7M for him when we have just sold such a player to Feyenord???????????.We have seen this before Sidwell,KEA,etc.we have one in Richardson already, decent hardworking, but don`t win you games.Worthy of PL football, yes, but at that fee,no way.If he comes good luck to him,but don`t tell me he is worth £7M,otherwisw you will be weeing down me leg and telling me it`s raining.
Feels good getting that off me chest.
    Sunday rants over,thanks for reading.Time for beer,it`s 8.30 here,nearly depression time 9.30 ko.Have a great day all.

  10. brasil
I’ve been thinking about Gardner and yes in his early days at villa he was exceptional, not much he couldn’t do. the injuries may have messed with his head and made him hesitant this happens whether you are conscious of it or not. the other thought is he is 6’2″ and was tall for his age was this a factor in his standing out at an early age? the other is he really hasn’t had much pitch time in the mens game, most of his time has been spent in games against young or younger players. he also comes across as a really nice lad maybe to nice? he really was a bigger, stronger more skillfull version of delph, box to box and could score with his head or both feet and could pick a pass, its a real shame if he has reached his potential and its not the required level.

  11. Muck fee,if it ain`t broke dont fix it is a cliche.

We have to coin a new one for Lambert…..

It`s broke and I don`t wanna fix it. Or it`s broke and I don`t know how to fix it.
Gabkky and Andi again,Lambert loves to make life hard for himself. He buys Sanchez and doesn`t play him.I give up I really do.The real test will be when/if we go a goal down.10 men behind the ball instead of 11?Answers ona postcard to the AVFC Looney Bin,or S75 and Steamer`s cafe.

  12. to be honest I am looking forward to the next 6 games, I have watched the top sides and they all play very open football bar Chelsea and they have still leaked goals. we are set up for them and if delph, gabby and weimann can maintain today’s level (no chance) we could see some success. pass me another happy pill mother

  13. Mark, are you dictating these posts?I only ask because how could a man in a straitjacket use a keyboard? How is the food and wi fi connection in Broadmoor?

  14. afternoon all!

i missed the 1st goal, i was stuck on the garage going thorugh all my old comics and didn’t want to stop.

but since seen both and they were good goals

the build up play a a d finish by wieman was reallty good.

  15. @ronnie HA!

i thought the same especially as burnley played scum utd off the park on motd last night and i got confused by a claret a blue team making the makc look rank!

  16. Great first half. Poor second half. The win is the most important thing.

Could only listen to the match on AVTV, Wiziwig was dodgy today.

Hull was poor in the first half.

  17. He’s determined not to drop Westwood for Sanchez, or in fact anyone.

Pity we don’t have anyone to take the free kicks that Grealish wins. By the way, utter disgrace to drop him after the O game, the only one who did anything at all and he selects the wankers above him.

  18. Shame Mark,I thought” Grealish getting kicked to death” would have been a classic.

A more sensational headline though “Brasil gets all his wonga back ,from the Steamers,Brasil was overwhelmed with £20 notes at the AVL reunion”

  19. Grealish= Talent.
That´s a star right there for you gentleman and Jenny, when he`s playing my eyes are glued to the screen and I could care less about my bloody iPhone. Sign him up for as long as we can because the mega rich teams will come calling in a year or two, no doubt in my mind.
After 3 matches it looks like we`ll be 4th (Arsenal win), and we’ve conceded just one goal.
    Bring Cleverley in, why not!!!
    No complaints from this cowboy.
    UTV

  20. Mark,
Saw a bit of Grealish last season and he took some right welly, he’s as tough as old boots, just gets up and walks away. Hope the new manager signs him long term ’cause this knob will finish him.

  21. steamer

do you think he’d make a 10? he’s got the eye for a pass, just needs to strengthen up a bit.

liverpool win 3-0 with 39% poss and 17 shots 8 on target to spurs 7 and 1 on target shocked by that result

  22. Maybe ,just maybe,we have an Academy graduate who is kosher, the real deal.I wish him the best,I really do,he is so talented.Keano won`t be happy unless he headbutts a few though.

BTW ,Keane only need a pipe and he look likes Captain Birdseye. He looks like a trawlerman captain, set for a harsh winter on the North Sea.

  23. Was that GG only on the beach at Brighton ?
Give him time to settle in, although i doubt if he has a future at VP while Lambert is here, he hates MF’s who pass the ball, just scrubbers like KEA, Westwood and co, thats all he was, a scuffler.

  24. Agree Steamer,I believe too many talented/small lads get pushed out wide.I would play him as the most forward point of the diamond behind a good hold up CF like Benteke. However as he plays in the UK he will be despatched to the wings,as a maverick. He has the guts and abilty to do damge in a forward/central position.

  25. Praising Leaner again. Feck off

Two donkeys scored for us today. Amazing. Villa winning at Villa Park, even more amazing. Lambert taking of Zoggy for a defensive mid so we invite pressure on to our selfs, not surprising

Should have won that even more comfortably today

Grealish was great when he came on. Got 3 players booked in 5 mins. We loved it in the Holte, sang the young lads name during and after. He didn’t react to the horrible tackles time and time again. Just got up and carried on. Should be starting games

Add quality winger (s) tomorrow and we stand a chance. Get Benteke back soon as well hopefully

    We done well

  26. Nice to see Richardson get an assist

There was a lot more fluidity and movement from our players today. About time

Nice to see the players getting really stuck in towards the end responding the Hull savage attacks on young Jack. Nice to see the Holte give a standing ovation for once instead of booing

  27. “Hull won’t have to do much to stop is from scoring. As long as a keeper plays, they won’t concede. We are shameful in the final 3rd, have been for a year now, but no changes from Mr Lamberk

Deadline day tomorrow. He better sort it out then

0-0 today. No shots on target”

written before the game by someone who has a deep knowledge of the game and always provides original insightful comments.

  28. No steamer, although this is also someone who says the same things time after time with no regard at all for the facts.
Lambert says we were excellent every week irrespective of how we’ve played…this person is far more original even than that!
Every single posting he says the same thing and one day this week managed to surpass even himself by saying the same thing in one posting no less than 4 times! Now that takes real dedication.

  29. Brilliant, important win. Incredible start to the season.

Looking forward to tomorrow now, the dream is 2 good players in.

Footballs a mad mad game….dont rule us out picking up points in nightmare sept.

  30. andrew

it doesn’t compute does it? we seem to be flying in the face of opinion and no benteke and hopefully players to come. if the results keep coming no matter your feelings on Lambert you’d have to take your hat off to him and maybe Keane. early days though but chuffed to be third even though I know it won’t last

  31. Managed to scarper off work early and get to the game. There were both positives and negatives today. Firstly the attendance was poor, the ground seemed half empty from where I sit in the Holte , I’d be surprised if there were actually 28k there, seemed far too many empty seats to be that high.
The first half was far better than anything we have seen for a fair while, agreed Hull looked out of sorts, lethargic and pretty crap, but we moved the ball well and there was plenty of effort, Delph was visibly enthused by his England call up, we should have scored 3/4 goals and put the game to bed.
The second half was much poorer, we invited pressure and lost our shape and sat back just leather inch the ball anywhere hoping to hit them on the break, they were unlucky with Westwoods hand ball ,and after they scored it became backs to the wall and hit and hope. We did look more solid though and unlike last year, there were no silly free kicks and calamity defending, but we were hanging on at the end and could have still put it to bed when bent shot wide.
Ending on a positive – Jack Grealish, got assaulted at least 3 times and played a great ball thru, more to come from a promising young talent.
We deffo need to dip in the market on deadline day, don’t believe Cleverley is the answer especially as Kagawa and Sigurdsson have both gone for £2m less than his asking price, I’d prefer Holtby.

  32. Hello All.

I might not have commented for a while but it doesn’t mean I don’t follow.

It makes me laugh that if we would of lost or drawn there would be hundreds of comments on how shit we are. We play a good game never letting Hull rest for a second and barely get any comments at all. It is a shame that this great site has gone the way it has.

I still regard you all a great bunch but for fudge sake give credit where credit is due and Mark stop sniffing the barmaids apron at the Brasenose Arms it’s sending you nuts.

  33. Barcelona, one word team.

    Mark

When you think tekkers and kozac must return and any poss signings tomoz you could almost begin to get excited about villa again. Almost.

Respect to gabby and weimann today, silenced us lot today!!

  34. Can’t comment on the match til I’ve seen MOTD. Chuffed with a win and more than 1 shot on goal.

Hull City are the only club to have successfully prized away the talismanic Paul McShane from Sunderland.

  35. Haggis, Don’t worry….odds are we’ll struggle in the next few games and then there’ll be plenty of comments to read on here again.

  36. Well the first half it actually looked like we knew how to play the game they call football. Passed, retained possession, barely a hint of a hoof up to the front boys, patient, hustling and some well worked goals.

Second half we started brightly but sat back too much. Their goal was sloppy from Villa. A needless free kick followed up with poor defending and ball watching.

Showed some fight though which made a change. Bringing on Grealish, Sanchez (looks tidy) and Bent must be the first time in years we have made 3 subs who actually looked like they knew what they were doing, and not making up the numbers.

    What did I take away?

We ain’t perfect, sure, but if we play like the first 45 mins all the time, we’ll do alright.

Bent needs to sharpen up, should have hit the target near the end.

Grealish needs game time to learn to trust his ability. He shouldn’t start games yet I don’t think he is ready yet.

Gabby silenced a few critics. He an Andi linked up well, but it needs to happen a lot more.

CNZ can chase back and tackle – where has been hiding this?

Attendance was low, but all of them seemed to park in the same effing car park as me, and we’re in front of me getting out!

  37. B62- lambert didn’t sound to positive on Cleverley after today. Hopefully won’t happen, not for 8 mill anyway. 4 mill maybe, but 8 mill takes the biscuit

Sinclair been mentioned a lot. Would like him. We still need two quality players to come I to tomorrow

  38. Robbo.. any thoughts on the game..

Or are you back to just pick holes in peoples statements 🙂

We won.. have done well thus far.. tactics wise PL is still lacking.. seems afraid to try and win games and still goes for safety first..

Gabby and Weimann.. played well today.. let’s see how they do next 10-15 games.. only questioning it due to previous form..

  39. The attendance was shocking, but that’s what you get when your manager breaks the home and disgraces football with how he sets his teams up

  40. As for transfer window.. would really like a winger and AM..

Looks like Cleverely will come in so the AM goes out of the window..

Hopefully a good winger still comes in..

  41. Like many on here approached my first game of the season with mixed emotions after a summer of high quality sport and new levels achieved in the morris dancing world just did not know what to expect today. The most unexpected events unfolded – Andrew P showing positivity and calling our 2-1 win, passing and moving, Guzan playing out from the back, subs when players were clearly out on their feet because they had put in a shift not because they did not give a fek.
Yes we invited pressure on in the 2nd half but Hull have also got some good players and were clearly well organised by potato man.
Grealish – looks like a marked man. Quite shocked by the treatment they dished out to him, it was like something from the early 70’s, extremely bad sportsmanship. Will be hoping for more cameo appearances from Grealish.
Finally just for you grumpy b’tards out there the big gripe is we are still a one half team but today that was some half.
Well done Villa lets see what we pick up from the horrible run after the international break those fixtures will be a leveller for us however should we decide to keep on with this passing and moving stuff alien as it must be to our lot after the last two seasons we may just surprise a couple of the meedjas’ loved ones.
    UTV!

  42. Lionheart. The point I am making is that it is easy criticize when we are playing badly but if we play well then the same people go silent. I have been taught that if you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything at all which seems the opposite on here lately. When I first found this site it was a refreshing change from the negative TVB and the banter was brilliant. Don’t get me wrong it is still here with the usual suspects. I got my first season ticket 80/81 and had some great times down villa park but a few years later we went down. Same with the spell in the nineties and MON era but other than that Villa have been mediocre. The last few years haven’t been good by any standard but we could of gone the way of Leeds or Portsmouth. Injuries have also played their part.

  43. Hagis.. agreed.. but it works both ways.. there’s people who won’t comment whne things are not going well.. a victory and they start throwing the usual cliches.. p.s i am not talking about you 🙂 just a general analysis..

I am very happy with the start.. without getting greedy.. the fact we are fo sale and PL for me isn’t the manager i thought he was when he first joined.. we are in a decent place IMO..

Leaving that fact to the side.. PL does love the 4-3-3- with Gabby and Weimann always starting.. but Gabby esp has shown he is a 1 in 10 game man.. which is my worry and slight scepticism.. will he go back to that same form.. can he keep it going.. same goes for Weimann.. who for me is played out of position..

But overall considering the circumstances i am relatively happy 🙂

  44. Lionheart. I cant comment on the game this time as I wasn’t able to make the 450 mile round trip today. I’m in Steamer’s camp in my disgust of the way the fans are an afterthought in football these days. Too many games are moved to Sundays or midweek and for those of us living a long way away that can count us out from attending. In the last two seasons its meant that there is no saving in taking a season ticket and it’s just about ensuring a decent seat for those games that you can attend.
As for “picking holes in other’s statements”, I wasn’t actually picking holes, the holes are already there . . . . . . I was just pointing them out.

  45. Lionheart. I am just taking every games as it goes. Even last year we beat Arsenal, Man C and Chelsea and should of beat Liverpool. After 3 games we’re a sixth of a way to Premiership safety. We have a good back four ( for now ), our star player coming back in a month and players that were frozen out last year proving they still have a part to play in our squad. Hutton was the anti Christ yet hasn’t put a foot wrong so far.

Lambert was never my choice but with the restrictions he has had and his hands tied by upper management, poor staff and under performing/absent employees. I think he has displayed admirably. Yes he has made some shockers. I have been in that position and it shows strength in the face of adversity when it is all too easy to put the blame on others.

Don’t get me wrong I am no happy clapper, I get frustrated when we lose although lately not as bad. At least when we lose now my wife, family and pets are not afraid to come near me.

  46. Mixed bag of comments, as usual,

Unfortunately di not make the game, which is probably why they won..!!

Surprised that no-one has mentioned Sanchez, as it was his totally stupid unnecessary tackle that gave away the free kick from which Hull scored, and the look on Keane’s face was thundrerous, as I am sure he did not agree with the substitution, which was unnecessary, as villa may well have gone on to score more, if they had kept up the pressure, or perhaps he would have preferred to put Grealish on.

At least we managed to hold out for the win, and maybe we can continue to build confidence, as this squad continues to play together. looking forward to the next one now..!!

  47. I do not think we will sign Cleverley, and we may not even sign anyone at all, unless some really outstanding opportunity comes Lambert’s way. He may save the money now until January…

  48. It’s not pretty at times but there’s a definite improvement with the effort & commitment being shown. Confidence is slowly coming back which is a massive force in any sport. I don’t think we’re anywhere near the finished article but I’m happy and truth be told, shocked at picking up 7 points so far.

Whatever the reasons, be it Roy Keane, Paul Lambert change of management style, bomb squad being brought back into play, let’s just enjoy it. We’re all quick to point the finger when it’s a bad result. Credit where credit’s due – we played very well the 1st half and it’s something to build on. UTV

  49. Morning All. Transfer deadline day is here.

If you need a distraction, apparently I cloud was hacked last night and several stars have had naked pictures posted on the internet including Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlet Johansson and Yvonne Strahovski ( the babe in Chuck ) to name but a few. My stepson showed me a few posted on Reddit and now the Telegraph’s reported it.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11067182/Nude-Jennifer-Lawrence-photos-leaked-by-hacker-who-claims-to-have-private-pictures-of-100-A-listers.html

  50. Much needed win yesterday and two upfront which helped us to be more dangerous —– i am really happy that lambert seems to have worked out what is required to start building a half decent side by addressing the poor defence

Gabby and Andy did well but i won’t be get over excited and am sill looking for a lot more than 3 or 4 goals per season — i do think andy could be a good striker if played as a stiker thou

the Cleverly deal worrys me a bit as i heard the soccer satuday guys talking about him saying he only passes sideways and backwards- but we already have westwood for that
