Here is Aston Villa season thus far in numbers (prior to the Baggies game, which is when this piece was written):
This season in the league:

Aston Villa have conceded at least one goal in 82% of their home matches, and the club have failed to score in 54% of their home matches. The team has also lost 64% of their home matches, and had failed to win in their last 5 home matches (prior to the derby).

67% of Aston Villa’s points have been earned away, and 64% of their goals have been scored away from home.

Villa has scored 22 goals in the league which is the 12th most, and oddly enough Villa also rank 12th in the goals conceded table with 29 goals crashing past Brad Guzan (55.2% of goals conceded have come at home). [Villa sat in 11th place at the time of writing, they sit in 10th as of today – Matt]

The team have leaked 6 goals this season between the 31st and 45th min of matches.

If there was a programme title that explained Villa’s circumstances as succinctly as possible, it would be “Home and Away” because the club have appeared like two separate teams depending on where they are playing.

Focusing on the home angle, the clbu have the worst home record in the league picking up a mere 8 points from 11 games in front of their season ticket holders (again, this statistics was taken before Wednesday night – it is 11 points in 12 games now).

Away from home, the team’s lack of quality in the midfield sector does not seem to hamper them quite so much as Villa have the 8th best away record in the league picking up 16 points from 11 games. (Only one point less than Manchester City and a point more than Liverpool – a massive achievement when viewed in the context of less spending).

The current form table places Villa 18th with 5 points acquired from the last 8 games (now 8 points from 9 games). Villa are currently on a streak of 5 home league games without a win, though the win against Albion has finished that run.

Christian Benteke is naturally the club’s top scorer with 6 league goals (now 7) of which 2 (now 3) have come at home and 4 away.

Summer recruit Libor Kozak is second with 4 league goals, and the Czech seemed to be coping quite well adjusting to English football prior to his injury. Villa are averaging one goal a game overall in the league, 0.73 at home and 1.27 away. Again, these statistics are taken prior to the Albion game.

In terms of yellow and red cards, the club are currently doing all in their power not to win the fair play league – the squad has amassed a massive 52 yellow cards which is the worst in the league. Amazingly no red cards have been dished out to the boys in claret & blue, despite an abundance of yellows.

Villa top three creators this season have been:

1: Gabby Agbonlahor 5 Assists
2. Andreas Weimann 3 Assists
3. Matt Lowton 2 Assists

Despite the clubs abysmal home form the average attendance this year is 36,969 – testament to the supporters and their commitment in trying times.

So they are some of the key figures we’ve seen this season. The big question is how do you – the readers – take those figures in terms of how you currently feel about the club?
