Lots and lots being mentioned regarding David Moyes this evening, with rumoured talk of him being officially approached by the club. I clarify, this is rumour and not an official club announcement. As if you expected one of those regarding Moyes.

The question is this though – is David Moyes the right man to take Aston Villa forwards? There are arguments both for and against obviously. In his defence he has, for the most part, kept Everton in the top eight during his reign with a fourth place finish getting Everton into the Champions League. On the flip side, Moyes has done very little else with Everton seemingly still a half season team – they start well and fall away, or vice versa.

Of course, there is a big argument to say that Moyes hasn’t spent a fortune under Bill Kenwright, and this is the reason why his Everton team have never progressed any further than where he has – into the top eight. In that, there is actually a lot to be said about the reasoning why David Moyes WOULD take the job.

Why would Moyes leave for Aston Villa?

You see, as much as I’m sure some disagree, Everton are around the same size as a club as we are. For David Moyes to up and leave for Aston Villa, it indicates that he has money to spend. And I’m not talking about just having Ashley Young’s fees to spend. I’m talking about a lot of money. Money on the scale of £40m plus player sales. Lord knows, looking at our squad, we will need to spend it.

FIFA Financial Play regulations come in soon, and this is partly why we are seeing very high spend – better to buy at a higher price when you can spend, than at a slightly lower price when you can’t due to turnover restrictions. To that end, I think we will see a big spend in the transfer window across the whole of the league, not just with us. Ashley Young going to Manchester United for a reported £20m, with one year left on his contract, is a transfer you would only have attributed to Manchester City before now. Not anymore.

Moyes – The Man?

Speaking from my own opinion, I don’t find the potential appointment of Moyes as particularly inspiring. Of course, I will support whoever is the manager as this is the club I love, but I don’t see that he has really done anything massively great in his time at Everton. He’s not kicked on despite having arguably more quality “difference makers” (to use John’s term) than our team, albeit in different positions.

He’s got Arteta, Fellaini, Cahill, Baines in the first team, and to me that is a pretty good set of people who can change games. He had a young Rooney before he left – again another game changer.

Look at Aston Villa and ask where the difference makers are. The only difference a lot seem to think is either a) where can I get more money to leave the club, or b) I joined the club under O’Neill to get more money I wouldn’t get elsewhere. The result is a pretty poor squad.

On the flip side, if Moyes does have the money, he may spend it well. He may do. O’Neill hadn’t had a lot of money before Villa, and then he wasted it. If we are going to appoint Moyes, then we had better hope we don’t see a repeat performance.

The one thing that does excite me about Moyes is that when we were linked with average English players, Moyes bought Fellaini and was linked with players such as Miguel Veloso and Joao Moutinho – both far better players than any in our current midfield.

So the question is – would you be happy with David? Do you think he will come?
