Paul Lambert has issued a statement through the LMA stating:

“I am extremely proud to have managed Aston Villa, a founder member of the Football League, and this sentiment will always remain with me.

My initial remit was to conduct a massive overhaul of the playing squad, lower the overall wage structure of the playing staff and achieve this whilst keeping the club in the Barclays Premier League.

There was also a concerted effort to purchase and develop younger players who would provide a solid footing for the football club to move forward and enhance the value of the playing squad in the future.

When I came on board the club’s owner, Randy Lerner, warned me that I was embarking on the toughest challenge of my working life and he was not wrong.

But I have never stepped away from hard work and I put my heart and soul into the job from my first day until my last.

There are many people throughout my time at Aston Villa to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude.

Firstly, I’d like to thank Randy Lerner for not only providing me with the opportunity to manage one of the most illustrious clubs in world football but also for the support and friendship he offered me throughout my time at the club.

I’d also like to place on record my appreciation to Paul Faulkner who conducted affairs at the club with unstinting integrity and constant dignity during his tenure as Chief Executive.

I leave behind some wonderful people at both Bodymoor Heath and Villa Park and express my gratitude for their dedication and loyalty. A special mention must also go to my coaching staff for their commitment.

To the players, my sincere thanks to each and every one of them. They are a fantastic group of players and I wish them every success for the rest of their playing careers. I hope to see many of them achieve great things in the game.

Finally, I pay tribute to the supporters who are among the most passionate I have ever encountered. They rightly hold huge expectations for their beloved football club and I sincerely hope they are rewarded with the success they deserve.

I completely understand their frustrations and always shared their view that the football club is too big not to be competing at the top end of the table. I hope that can happen.

You never stop learning in football management and I certainly believe the invaluable experience from my time as Villa manager will prove hugely beneficial in the next stage of my managerial career.”

  1. No hard feelings, good luck in the future.

My feeling about lamberts time is summed up by pretty much allready forgoten about him all ready.

I don’t care if the new manager is form iceland, brazil, putney or the rain forest…he just has to be bloody good. Dont buy into prem experience….if your good at your job he will get results. Football is the same all over the world.

Klinsmann would be my choice out of those spoken….don’t know about many managers in world football though. Would like a Hoddle and younger man combo though

  2. One of the most illustrious clubs in world football.

Nice. Still doesn’t take any responsibility though does he

    Dyche. Howe. Rafa.

I’d take any of those 3 happily.

Sherwood. No thanks. Hoddle, big risk but maybe

  3. To the players, my sincere thanks to each and every one of them. They are a fantastic group of players and I wish them every success for the rest of their playing careers. I hope to see many of them achieve great things in the game.

He really does talk knackers. No mention of Culverarse and Karsa then ?
Although he was gracious about Lambert i bet Bent is peeing himself laughing, who’s not good enough now?

  4. I think we’re going to get a short term appointment, Hoddle may well be the man. Look our problems come from a lack of creativity… Surely Hoddle can pass on some of that to our midfield… He might play an odd formation but what he will do it stick 2 up top and give us a chance.

Many other sites are talking about Cowans being put in, but for one he isn;t interested in managing Villa and two I’m not sure sure he would gain the instant respect from the players… he gets it from the fans, but the squad will be too familiar with him.

A Klinnsman would be lovely but unrealistic for me. Rafa too. They would want huge money and would want a sizeable transfer budget. We all know that ain’t going to happen in the short term.

So we’re left with Hoddle or Sherwood…. Dyche won’t come he’ll want to finish off the season with Burnley. Eddy Howe goes in to that bracket too.

Curbishley is a name that i’ve not seen mentioned, sure he’s been out of management recently but he can send out a well organised team who can score goals… he can make the most of what he has… his time at Charlton proved that.

Other than that Who? Laursen? Keane? Lennon? McCoist? I don’t don’t fancy any of them.

    Christophe Galtier??

Shame we waited so long, we could have got Moyes im sure of it…

  5. B6 (previous thread)

Well, this club was mainly built by Scots so you can see their logic – a little!

I also think what you say about getting the basics right points to a Sherwood-type appointment as being the only valid appointment considering where we are in the league. This is the only area where I depart from Darren’s thinking – I do think in this situation you need someone in who is going to be more geared to basics, just in order to avoid relegation.

Maybe such an appointment *now* may be a short-term agreement, just for this single purpose of avoiding relegation.

  6. Graham,
I read yesterday Curbishley has gone to palace, dunno, seen nothing in the papers.
As you said theirs not many realistic targets out there, its a gamble at the best of times but with the rewards so high we can’t afford to make YET another mistake.

  7. Still with the high expectations comment, let it go Paul, as if we need to curtail our expectations any further than scoring goals, winning games and avoiding relegation. Lamberk is history now, a painful one but we can all move on including him and there maybe a team more suitable for him.

Short term McAllister – meets the criteria of having done it already for us, is available at no cost, would get respect
Long Term Spaletti – experience of saving teams from relegation in Serie A, got AS Roma into Champions League, won Russian league with Zenit

  8. Been sacked a few times though, he did decent job at Tamworth and because of who his dad was that opened a few doors, to be honest i think thats his level.
Got just the chap – Barry Fry.

To be honest anyone competent could do the job of keeping us up, the fans will do the rest, JL will testify what it was like when Tommy Doc took over, the previous home game vs PNE the atmaosphere was like a morgue, the next one was like a madhouse, i think Sunday’s will drag us up a level or two, no-where like VP when its rocking.

  9. Apparently, the dark horse is Klinsman, as he is admired by Lerner, and known to him according to some press sources.

Fox timing was right, as the get out clause in Lambert’s contract was tied to relegation.

I think the return of Keane in the short term, with or without MON, would see us over the line until the summer. He has the knowledge of the players, and Gabby etc, would have to get off their arses…

He would also use Bent and Grealish in his squad. I think it was Jen said in an earlier post that it was Keane that wanted Bent in the team, and he and Benteke would be awesome together…

  10. B6B
Think Frank said he’d retired from management a few months ago, what a waste of tactical nous, i remember Fabio saying that he never had to change the tactics at Milan, Rijkaard did it for him automatically, one of the greats.

  11. Paul – how do you know the get out clause was tied to relegation ?

I would love to be a fly at BMH canteen when they’re all tucking into their full englishes and the new manager comes in – Roy Keane – looking mean and moody “what the F you looking at”hahaha – it’s like a Roald Dahl story . No we need someone new to get them going . Sid is too much part of the furniture .

And don’t joke about Trevor Francis either 🙂

  12. Fox now recons he wouldn’t rule out someone currently in a job, didn’t say whether it was a binmans job or what but it widens the range more….. KARANKA PLEASE.

  13. We all agreed Lambert had to go, the timing of it is where fans differ, a lot including myself think his sacking was long overdue, but now it’s done the hard part really starts. We have 13 games to ensure our survival, we are in 18th place and the new man will have the same players as Lambert, they need to start taking some responsibility and putting in some real shifts, because as bad as Lambert was ( and he
E was god awful), they need to shoulder some blame and work hard to at least ensure survival, when we can sort things out long term this summer.
RL and to some degree TF also need to take long hard looks in the mirror and should do everything possible to save our season and future.
The immediate problem is Lamberts replacement, NONE of the early names inspire confidence,, the bookies list is long and varied, but I don’t think we can attract the calibre we crave, especially in 18th place with a seriously misfiring squad, no one wants to come here and be relegated. I’d love to have a Benitez, Klinnnsman, De Boer, Prandelli etc at our club but they won’t come under this owner and these circumstances, the landscape may change come the summer as long as we survive.
We can’t look long term until survival is assured, so who can we get?? Some of the names touted are awful , I don’t know the answer but Randys track record scares me, I fear Trevor Francis rocking up singing keep right on!!!

  14. Not going to even try to speculate on who we employ next because I am pretty sure we will not be involved in the recruitment process and even if Randy and Tommy rang and asked for my advice I would tell them to politely fuck off, they get paid handsomely to do their jobs so get on with it, sods law eventually Lerner will get something right he cannot keep fucking up can he.
I can just see it now —–
Lerner rings Ferguson to ask if he has any suggestions, what could possibly go wrong.

    AVFC SOME HOPE

  15. I really don’t understand why Sherwood is the favourite? He managed Spurs for half a season and they let him go. The Spurs fans were glad to see the back if him. He doesn’t have the experience.

Although we are in a desperate situation the board need to think carefully about the next appointment.

David Moyes would be a great appointment and has the experience to keep us in the league.

I also like Laudrop for his brand of football and Klinsman has done a great job with team USA.

    We shall see!

  16. “Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert at Hull City’s KC Stadium
Paul Lambert is reportedly hurt after learning of his Aston Villa sacking in a phonecall from Tom Fox.

Lambert neglected to thank Fox during a statement issued through the League Managers Association today.

And it appears the 45-year-old Glaswegian is disappointed that the chief executive did not tell him face to face.” Bham mail
I don’t blame him . Ignorant and rude behaviour from Fox. I thought PL and RL were great pals ?

  17. Jenny
It seems that class is in short supply at VP, Fox should have had the bottle to do it in person, however I struggle to feel sorry for Lambert due to his part in the Culverhourse/Karsa affair and how he in turn has treated some of the players, it seems you reap what you sow. However I’m sure all the millions of pounds he has taken from the club will comfort him somewhat.

  18. Roy Keane and the likes NO THANKS

We have seen enough hardman bully boys recently to realise that they will not work for us

Management is a skill that demands a lot more than rolloking players

The skills needed are very broad – man management – someone who can get players to be willing to run though brick walls for them — tactics – someone who knows how to use effective tactics and play players in positions they can be effective for the team in — — —- Communication – someone that for once we can understand and so can everyone else 🙂 – but is good with the press and people at all levels —- Game plan —- someone that has cleared ideas of how to take a club forward and has proved this to a degree elsewhere and it doesnt have to be a prem team but just proof of guniune proggression

  19. Jen,

That ties in with a Villa fan on TS last night, he said after the game a number of Villa fans were waiting by the team coach after the Hull game, he said all the players got on the coach and drove off, Lambert never came out of the KC and never went back on the team bus, this guy said he was surprised that nobody else had put it out in the public domain, but now it seems to make sense.

    AVFC STILL HOPE

  20. What do we need?

Someone who can keep Villa away from relegation (as the first priority)!!

The “someone” must have rapport with the players to tackle this emergency – surely? Anything else I believe to be a luxury at this stage – until we get to the next stage! 😉

  21. Considering the crepe job he did Lamberts got a nerve complaining about anything.

Was considering Ralf Rangnick but anyone can get Jeerman badges.
The Dutch produce outstanding coaches with good knowledge of the English game, Bert van Marwijk isn’t bad and he might bring his son-in-law Mark van Bommel who would be a great captain and knock any slackers into shape.

  22. I don’t think we’ve had a strong enough manager, given the player power on show when Lamberk didn’t back Keane when he challenged some of the underperformers in my opinion.

Whether that type of mgmt would get the desired results I doubt it, mostly because footballers are old kids, they don’t have to grow up, they lead cosseted lives and don’t have the same worries you or I have in terms of paying bills etc. Because you have to treat grown men like babies, Keane failed in approach, he’d be great managing a GAA or Rugby team

  23. Steamer,

I can’t see a foreign coach wanting to come over and take over Villa in this situation, do you?

It doesn’t square with me … I think that very problem will keep Villa’s options down to very few.

  24. This is very true B62 – and I recall PL saying about DBS staggering drop from the squad , the star player, that he hadn’t spoken to him about it and if DB wanted to talk he knew where his office was”. This was confirmed by DB who said he never knew why he was dropped and PL never spoke to him. Those who live by the sword die by the sword I suppose but I’d have expected more manners from a CEO – and not a climb down the ignorant level which has permeated the club for far too long .
Pl should have been warned – they hung AM out to drive just the same.
SWV – that’s interesting about the team bus .

  25. Just to throw another name into the mix without any evidence of interest from either the person, ourselves as fans or the board; how about Gary Neville?

  26. I don’t buy we can’t get this guy or that guy – this is the premier lge and its been beaten out of us the fact that we are one of the best clubs in the lge and beyond in stature and history — with the right guy at the helm who has confiedence in his own ability (not blind confiedence of course) the sky is the limit — bring on the good times and lets get a top man in or if not someone short term

  27. Runtings,

yes, your last remark is the answer methinks. Someone to come in and just steer Villa out of trouble – and *then* to get someone permanent in during the summer.

  28. I got the following about Sherwood from the Vital Spurs site manager (as quoted on Vital Villa).

Apart from the last para caveat if confirms my thoughts…

Personally I Always liked him and thought he did a very good job under almost impossible circumstances. If you consider that the football played under AVB was pretty dire (slow and predictable) and the dressing room seemed split and apathetic. Looking to get the team playing attacking and entertaining football whilst also sorting the dressing room amid rumours of his sacking in the media daily, was optimistic at best.

The football was perhaps too open, but his 60%+ win rate argues that he was successful and also playing good football. He did ruffle a few feathers in the dressing room, but this was mainly with players that weren’t performing or appeared unsettled.

Also consider the elevation of Kane and Bentaleb to the first team and the readiness of others such as Mason to the first team under him and latterly Pochettino to prove the earlier work he did with the development squad indicates he k ows a player and can get the best from them.

My only reservation is that he may initially irritate your already unhappy dressing room with his ‘honesty’ that might well upset those that aren’t motivated etc, but has he learned from his time with Spurs? Will he be different with a longer term security? I have a feeling he would do well and is a character that will relate to the fans, you will love his honesty and he has the character to galvanise the dressing room, playing attacking football, but it may be bumpy at first.

  29. JL.
That confirms the impression i had about Sherwood, not the most likeable but who cares ?
Agree its unlikely that a foreigner will be appointed, Jeergan the Jeerman doesn’t have any kind of record as a club boss does he ? to me he’s a bigger gamble than most of the names mentioned.

  30. Being likeable or liked is a bonus,if the new man comes in and upsets a few who are on easy street, who cares?Sick of modern players attitudes, yeah,I m talking about you CNZ,The Flabmeister. We need someone to get them off Easy Street, and to fight for the nect few months.

  31. This thread has depressed the fuck out of me already. The names mentioned – I just despair. Solksjaer? The guy that got relegated and then sacked? Hoddle? The religious freak that has achieved nothing since the 1990s? Do fuck off.

Middlesboro fans are laughing at me on Twitter for suggesting Karanka as they don’t think he would prefer working for Lerner over Gibson.

Jenny – going back to the previous thread. I don’t believe Lambert was given a 4 year deal based on anything he did this season. I think it was for carrying out Lerner’s plan to the letter the previous two seasons (significantly reduce the wage bill whilst staying in The Premiership). They found the very small window of opportunity to give him this contract and that was after we got a few good results. I think Lerner had been waiting (a long time) for such a little run as an excuse.

  32. Keane? no chance he fell out with half the team already. don’t think sherwoods that bad short term either. we need someone to inspire and galvanise our bunch of shot shy losers, wish churchill was alive
put this up yesterday, maybe not one for now but in the summer, Paco Jemez been hearing good things and his training and coaching has been watched by some of the best managers

    http://www.getwestlondon.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/who-potential-brentford-manager-paco-8616637

  33. how about watfords manager? Slaviša Jokanović at least they score goals. or i’ve just seen this:

Brentford boss Mark Warburton has emerged as a front runner for the vacant Aston Villa manager’s position following Paul Lambert’s sacking.

Warburton’s odds were slashed from around 40-1 to 6-1 by bookies following Lambert’s dismissal by Villa owner Randy Lerner.

  34. Warburton is interesting. He used to be a City trader, got his badges, and has worked his way up in the game.

OGS no a miliions times no.

Sherwood will get I think, because his experience is so recent, short yes,but recent.

  35. haha Mark – great description for instilling confidence “shot shy losers” Roy Keane would be proud of that one.
No to OGS – as it was a no the first time
Ian Taylor again said he would like to be involved in some capacity – obviously not manager
Interesting re Hoddle – yes he has been out the game managing – but football is football
Sherwood – he has been favourite for every managers job going

Can’t wait for the plain spotters and the rise of the Mystery Man and the other fake ITKs – I heard a rumour !

  36. Droyd – maybe – it didn’t make sense at the time but then neither did appointing Alex McLeish because “villa fans would think we got one over the noses” which was one of PFs reasons. So nothing would surprise me.

  37. Rags – Gary Neville is certainly knowledgeable – I started off hating his punditry but he knows his stuff . Isn’t he gong to partner Adrian Durham on Drive time on TS . I think he would make a good manager one day but not yet.

  38. John L – that is interesting about TS and yes – the honesty of his press interviews would be refreshing after the “we were excellent”. I still think he has to prove himself in a club where he has no connections first. 13 games to go and we just can’t take the risk of any more dressing room fall outs. For some reason, it is easier for a young foreign manager to come in and earn respect (like Poticini spurs mgr) than english ones – there is an air of mystery about them . Our “shot shy losers” will look at SHerwood and think “hes only managed for 4 months” possibly

  39. agree with your balanced views re a new manager jen

Your never going to bully any premier lge team into playing well in this day and age

imo the only type of manager that can get the full potential at the club and i believe there are a few out there have the following

the players love playing for him
the tactics are practical and effective
    adaptable
good with the press – wether in a likeable way or knows how to manipulate them
    great comminication skills
either great themselves or recoginising and developing young talent or has the backroom staff with these attributes
Ambitious , determind and hates losing

that’s not too much to ask for is it 🙂

  40. All I know is whoever is appointed needs to hit the ground running!
We need to win 3 of our next 5 matches to really put us in a position to feel like we’re going to stay up. Lose the first couple of matches in charge and it’s going to be tough sledding for a variety of reason… UTV

  41. Having thought about the sacking business I’ve come to the conclusion that if we had been in the bottom-3 in December, that Lambert would have been sacked then … That’s the only criteria I think they had and one built into his contract. Under no circumstances did the club want to pay 4 years compensation.

In other words I’m suggesting that the fact it’s pretty late on in the day to do the sacking was a secondary consideration. The fact that it’s left Villa in a more precarious position is nothing to the top brass – saving on the compensation money is.

I must have had something weird for breakfast to be that cynical! 🙂

  42. yes JL n rb its all about staying up – its a great chance to get the right fit as manager for the club long term
not that i expect that will happen

I do thing thou that due to the shackles of PL’s whole management style being removed will be enough to see this group of players climb the table

  43. Runtings,

Yep … when Brian Little left in late February 1998 in similar (but certainly not identical) circumstances, the change of manager had an instantaneous effect and Villa got out of trouble quite easily. So those “shackles” you speak of having gone plus the affect of a new manager should be the spur (no pun intended!). But it’s not a cast-iron certainty – the first thing they have to do is start remembering where the net is.

  44. JL- Lambert still feels all loved up with Lerner but you can guarantee Lerner loaded the gun and gave the order to pull the trigger. two statements distance Lerner from the shooting, fox’s, “Lamberts jobs safe” followed by Lerner saying Fox makes all the decisions. then bingo Lambert buggers up the Hull game and he’s off. ooh I like a good murder

  45. yes John was it Mr fox in the phone booth with a sharp word or mr Lerner with a pat on the back with a poison pen? 😉

I wonder at what point they were considering it and how far reaching Fox’s manager search has gone? is he giving it a week or so for appearance sake or is the cupboard bare? one other thing that I thought was strange, the AM search pencilled in for the end of this month, very fishy and another wage that they don’t have to pay for.
I like the Simon Parkes stuff have heard of many people with the same experiences

  46. New manager and now a new site layout ? Like it

Randy’s statement shows he knows fuck all. He may as well of said nothing. Get the feck out of this club

Laursen want to come back. Get him back

  47. I’ll be gutted if Gabby and Wiemann are anywhere near Villa Park Sunday

Sack those two big headed sods as well and get Grealish starting

  48. and heres the money shot, oh I feel so vindicated 🙂

“the League Managers Association. “My initial remit was to conduct a massive overhaul of the playing squad, lower the overall wage structure of the playing staff and achieve this whilst keeping the club in the Barclays Premier League.”

  49. frem- there’s a long way to go before that will happen, any manager will have to see what he’s got. wonder who will be still there from the present staff to help him sift through

  50. Mark,

It’s all cloak and dagger stuff at VP, methinks.

On Simon Parkes, I am impressed with his balanced comments. He does not come across as a weirdo but as a balanced individual who has a strong commitment to spiritual development and that it should be our main concern. A bit different to the Coventry goalkeeper. 😉

  51. JL- yes he brings a bad name to the world of conspiracy. I used to listen to pod casts from a radio show called
coast to coast AM well worth looking up. they have 15mil listeners, every topic from aliens to spiritual, JFK , big foot. the people presenting their evidence were generally decent and intelligent, the listeners not so 😉

  52. True we’ve no say in who the new manager will be. We don’t own or run the club.
Nevertheless I’d be happy to see Gary McAllister get a crack at it. He already knows his way around Villa.

  53. Sum guy on twitter saying Sherwood has been offered the job and has accepted

Mmm. Short term he might get us out but I see him as guy who will up set most players more than anything. I don’t know, but I have it in my head that he doesn’t do tactics and just says attack. Better than what we have seen anyway:)

If he comes, I hope he has all the success in the world but I thought he was a bit of a twat at Spurs and even though he won a lot there, still didn’t some right somehow

  54. trinity me too, give the players the chance to use their own brains. repetitive tactics are no tactics as we have found out, or been found out as it is.

Gary mac hasn’t worked in football since us, liked him though.

think of all the players out on loan, its a big ask for the new man to sort this out

  55. I just found this article on FB
    and it’s worrying –

“Over the past few months, some clubs have been in the heartbreakingly sad situation of considering Tim Sherwood as a candidate to take over as their manager. Nothing quite defines desperation like being in a position where that man has somehow become a viable option to take your side forward. Time after time, however, Sherwood has been overlooked at the final moment, and a series of clubs have avoided making a horrific mistake. Yet, through his own brand of self-aggrandisement and increasing number of mutually beneficial pals in the press, the cult of Sherwood doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon—yet more proof that there isn’t a God.

Tim Sherwood is the personification of autofellatio. He is consistently dishonest, he is unimaginably unlikeable, he is perversely self-obsessed and spectacularly arrogant to boot. At the time of writing, it still isn’t completely clear or not whether he’s actually in possession of the full compliment of coaching badges required to become a Premier League manager, but it’s not like that’s stopped him before. The fact of the matter is this: Tim Sherwood is not the sort of person a professional institution of any nature should want to be associated with.

His only job in management at Tottenham is a perfect example of exactly why Sherwood should seem completely unemployable by all those unfortunate enough to be mentioned in the same breath as he is. The journey he took to the role of manager was less about hard work, suitability and having actually earned the position, but more about manipulation, gross misconduct and disloyalty. He was confirmed to be the source behind several tabloid attacks on then manager Andre Villas-Boas, and was feeding hyperbole-laden negative accounts of behind-the-scenes life at Tottenham to the likes of TalkSport, who were of course more than happy to help peddle and promote his agenda ridden rhetoric.

After the dust had settled on both Villas-Boas and Sherwood at Tottenham, the now-Zenit manager was asked about his relationship in his former role with the man who replaced him, and didn’t mix his words when replying:

“Tim was not part of my team, but I already alerted the president that he was detrimental to the club. (Sherwood) continued after I left and his leadership resulted in a extreme split between the players and the coach”.

In his own words, Villas-Boas highlights that he felt so strongly against Sherwood being involved at any level in the club he was managing that he proactively warned Daniel Levy about his negative effect on the club. In hindsight, Sherwood was probably one step ahead at that stage, and had already gained the confidence of Levy behind closed doors, which should probably go down as one of the chairman’s biggest errors of judgement in his time at the club.

Those who have not had to support a club he’s been in charge of have often mistaken Sherwood’s idiocy for honesty, in a similar fashion to how fans of Nigel Farage are often found describing his unique way of promoting bile. His am-dram level of theatrics in press conferences allowed him a platform to openly interview for every job available in football, and before long, his tenure at Tottenham became more about self-promotion than good management. Propelled by his overconfidence in his own ability and ignorance towards his own self image, Sherwood spoke of himself in Pep Guardiola-like glowing terms, when in reality being little more than an opportunistic charlatan.

The man he is most compared to is Harry Redknapp, the man who brought him in under his wing at Tottenham, and the man he may well yet replace at QPR, in a sort of football does Oedipus twist of fate. While their relationship with the press, tactical ineptitude and questionable character statuses are overtly comparable, the link is somewhat unfair on Redknapp, a man who I won’t often be found defending. Redknapp operates with a certain level of self-knowing, charisma and charm that eludes Sherwood, and unlike the former, Sherwood is yet to prove himself in several roles across the football league.

In fact, Sherwood has actually been actively turning down Premier League jobs, such is the man’s ego and sense of entitlement. His preference, apparently, is for complete autonomy with a club on all levels, and ideally for that club to be based around London, because god forbid he should have to commute. That’s an awfully long list of demands from a man who might not actually be entirely qualified to take up these positions he’s been routinely applying for. It’s a smack in the face of those managers down the league, who have cut their teeth in the lower leagues with bundles of experience, only for a man with a cabal of press associates and six questionable months at Tottenham under his belt.

We haven’t actually seen much of Sherwood managerially in an ideological sense. His time at Tottenham was boom and bust, a result of naivety and the over-simplistic. The football was generic, the tactics were maddeningly transparent and the results were par for the course. In the long term at Tottenham, he’ll be remembered as little more than a glorified caretaker and palette cleanser in between management regimes. His biggest achievement in his time in charge was the immediate introduction of Nabil Bentaleb to first-team football, for which he deserves credit, but that’s one note of success drowned out by a cacophony of various failings.

A perfect example of how Sherwood has campaigned himself since the summer came last week. Pictures emerged from a sponsor event, where a panel was assembled to discuss footballing issues of the day, including Sherwood himself, and one Henry Winter, a Telegraph football correspondent. In an almost parody like turn of events in which no party emerges from at all well, within 48 hours of those pictures appearing on the internet, Winter had penned a column eulogising about Sherwood, painting a picture of the perfect managerial revolutionary.

This is not a man that any football fan should want anywhere near their football club. Is he likely to win the odd football match and introduce a style of football that, much like a car crash, is watchable in a perverse way? Probably, yeah. But what you’ll also find is increased press access within the club, streams of information leaks and sourceless exclusives across the internet and a growing sense of disillusionment with your club the longer he stays in charge.

At some point in the future, Sherwood is going to have to accept a job in football again, rather than “turning them down” at the 11th hour because his “terms and vision” weren’t being adhered to. When that time comes, good luck to the club that falls for it—you’re going to need it.”

  56. I asked who wrote that article but the chap who posted said he couldn’t say as it had been withdrawn from press . Yes it is vindictive and it could be all false so maybe I shouldn’t have posted it but I don’t know how to delete it . Anyway , like I say – this was out there ; obviously not a great Sherwood fan – maybe it was AVBs agent ! 🙂

  57. Day telegraph / more reliable – wow asking to be sacked twice !

    By John Percy
    10:30PM GMT 12 Feb 2015
Frustrations led Scot to twice invite Lerner to end his tenure prior to eventual dismissal, while club consider Tim Sherwood and Glenn Hoddle for interim role

Paul Lambert told Aston Villa chairman Randy Lerner to sack him twice this season before he was finally dismissed on Wednesday by telephone.

Lambert’s frustration at working with a limited budget became so severe that he invited Lerner to end his tenure once in the summer and again earlier this year.

Telegraph Sport has discovered that Lambert warned Villa’s owner that the club were heading for relegation operating under such financial restrictions, but he was convinced to fight on as manager.

The 45-year-old then suffered the indignity of being sacked over the phone, less than 24 hours after the 2-0 defeat at Hull City.

Lambert is understood to have been shocked and bitterly disappointed after receiving a call from chief executive Tom Fox informing him he was to be dismissed after 2½ years.

His disappointment was reflected in his statement issued by the League Managers’ Association, which pointedly did not mention Fox, and it is believed Lambert felt he deserved more respect for the job he had done under difficult circumstances.

Fox, who was appointed by Lerner in August, is spearheading the search for Lambert’s successor and is determined to to make an appointment after the FA Cup tie against Leicester City on Sunday.

Villa could make a short-term appointment until the summer, with Tim Sherwood and Glenn Hoddle understood to both be under consideration for a firefighting role.

Sherwood is available but a move for the former Tottenham Hotspur head coach could be complicated by Thursday’s news that Chris Ramsey, a long-term assistant, was named as Queens Park Rangers manager until the end of the season.

Jürgen Klinsmann, the United States national team head coach, has been discussed but is more likely to be a target in the summer if Villa avoid relegation.

Paul Clement could be a contender but it is believed he wants to see out the season with Real Madrid before deciding on his future.

Villa want to make an appointment before the Premier League game against Stoke a week on Saturday.

Lerner broke his silence over the sacking on Thursday night. “Following several brutally challenging years at Villa, Paul Lambert arrived with a fresh view and a proven style and track record,” he said in a statement. “It was our hope, and belief, that Aston Villa would find its footing and strengthen during Paul’s tenure with the club.

“Adding players and investing in the squad over the last three years has strengthened Villa, and it is our hope that given the quality, leadership and team spirit at Bodymoor Heath that we can rise to the occasion for the remainder of the season.

“I want very much to thank Paul for his commitment to me personally, and to Villa, and wish him well personally and professionally in his future endeavors.”

Lambert was dismissed after Villa dropped into the bottom three and he admitted Lerner had warned him to expect the “toughest challenge of his career”.

His LMA statement read: “My initial remit was to conduct a massive overhaul of the playing squad, lower the overall wage structure of the playing staff and achieve this whilst keeping the club in the Premier League.

“There was also a concerted effort to purchase and develop younger players who would provide a solid footing for the football club to move forward and enhance the value of the playing squad in the future.

“When I came on board the club’s owner, Randy Lerner, warned me that I was embarking on the toughest challenge of my working life and he was not wrong. But I have never stepped away from hard work and I put my heart and soul into the job from my first day until my last.”

Villa have also dismissed suggestions that Lambert will receive more than a year’s salary in compensation. He is expected to receive around £2 million.

First-team coach Scott Marshall and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall will take charge of the team for the FA Cup tie against Leicester City.

  58. JD .lm not convinced on withe , on WM the other night he offered his services , then told us who he had managed and none worked out , it was quite funny , like a comedy sketch ,” yeah l managed so & so ” ” yeah but they went down” ” yeah but l managed so & so next” yeah you got sacked ” get the jist , love the bloke but nah not for me mate , as far as badges mate , anybody can sit for them and then call themselves a manager , mate has got them and he manages Beaufort sports under 12s (not a joke ) alarm engineer , fuck me you’ll get steamer , sww and mark sitting for them now ……..oh gawd

reading lambert’s comments , if true why didnt he threaten to resign ? instead of asking to be sacked , l do know he gets paid if sacked , but pride should have kicked in , anyway could give a round of fucks , l never wanted him here ,

steamer , poundland later , l need some of them glasses , lm having to put the laptop the other side of the room and use that bluetooth keyboard and mouse as the writing is so small on here its the only way l can see what lm writing !!! , (l can read signs about 30 mtrs away but not close up )

Matt , any chance of being able to load pics on here , l got some great blackmail ones , got one of sww from 1979 and he still wears his budgie jacket ,
thank fuck we never had these bloody camera phones though , our lot would still be in nick

  59. The gloves are off . General Krukak emerges from the wings and storms into Lambert back page of the sun – woah where did that come from , I thought he’d gone! Hope they have their contract of employment water tight as that Krulak statement will have Lambert on the phone to MON in minutes – wait for constructive / unfair dismissal claims !

  60. I don’t see anything in General Krulak’s message that’s untoward … merely the other side’s view on the matter.

If true, it’s quite revealing that it was Lambert’s policies on overlooking Bent and bringing in young players from lower divisions etc.

And as for Lambert asking Lerner to sack him, that’s unbelievable. He should just have walked.

  61. Jenny,

Just read that article re: Sherwood and to be fair it may be fabricated but it really concerns me that some of it is true, I have never really liked the bloke and rumour that he backed out of taking the jobs at Brighton, Palace, West Brom and QPR because he wanted full control of football from top to bottom fills me with dread.
Even short term with Hoddle would not work in my opinion, I just feel Sherwood is too abrasive and would not win over a dressing room full of players as for Hoddle I truly believe he has had his day.

Just read Krulaks statement and to be honest it is indicative of the malaise within the club that has put us in this mess, too many people at board level who know less than nothing about the game and should keep quiet if they have nothing constructive to say.

It fills me with dread that we have the wrong people involved in a very important should read vital decision to select the next manager to take us out of trouble, it confirms once again that Lambert was only part of the problem.

    AVFC HOPE or RIP

  62. SWV,

Much earlier I posted a completely different view of Sherwood by someone whose opinion might be more trusted, but at the end of the day it’s all about opinions and people will see the matter differently.

From what I read, if someone like Sherwood is appointed it would be just to firefight the current situation. But if so why not put Gordon Cowans in the seat until the end of the season? – or someone else with good Villa credentials. Even Brian Little.

  63. I only read the headlines – unreliable I know on Krulak and got to work now so will read later . He seemed to be disputing Lambert’s claims on what his remit was for the four seasons .

  64. As to SWV’s comments about the quality of the board, I generally agree. If they had any real insight as to what UK football is all about they would have acted more responsibly and *directed* Lambert down certain channels. Effectively they admit that they don’t know how to run the club. That’s the way I see it at least.

  65. A ‘telling’ letter from the B’ham Mail:

    Dear Randy,

We’re glad you have finally acknowledged that Paul Lambert was no longer the right man for the job.

Hopefully your decision wasn’t too late, and it was in time to preserve Aston Villa’s Premier League future.

But for all the departed manager’s failings – and there were many – every single member of the Villa Park faithful knows the problems at the football club run much deeper than the 45-year-old Glaswegian.

The club might be Scot-free, but you’re far from Scot free, Randy.

There are big questions that need answering, and we’d love to sit round the table and talk about the things that really matter.

We understand you’re 5,000 miles away – that Atlantic is awfully wide – and distance has protected you from the wrath of the disillusioned, dwindling crowd.

But the focus is very much now on you.

We need to know what you plan next, how you intend to convince long-suffering Villa fans, and managerial candidates, that there are happier times ahead.

Because survival is just the starting point. It is not enough for a club like Aston Villa.

When you handed out those ‘Proud History, Bright Future’ scarves in 2007 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Villa’s European Cup triumph, you made a bold statement.

“We are proud of our history and traditions but we don’t live in the past,” was the strong message from the club.

“Instead, the glories of our past are a spur to write new chapters in the history of the club.

“The addition of a white star to the club crest signifies the club’s greatest achievement while also signifying our ultimate future goal – becoming champions of Europe again.”

Well, we know that dream has faded; we know the boom of your first four years has made way for the bust of the last four.

What we don’t know is what you intend to do about it.

What are your aspirations for the here and now, let alone the future?

The possibility that you might miss out on your share of the new £5 billion TV deal will surely have concentrated your attention.

It certainly seems to have forced your hand regarding the manager’s position.

So what’s going on, Randy? Do you intend to drive the club forward, and seek fresh investment, perhaps even give the next manager a bob or two to spend on players?

Or do you intend to sell it? And if so, how much do you want?

In the meantime, in your role as custodian of the claret and blue, the onus is on you to learn from the mistakes of the past when you make the most crucial appointment in Villa’s modern day history.

Hopefully, the fresh perspective from your new right man, Tom Fox, will make Villa’s manager search more successful than the recruitment of Gerard Houllier, Alex McLeish and Lambert, who all failed.

Time is of the essence, although you don’t need to make a knee-jerk job of it. Progress in the FA Cup this weekend is important. Of course, it is. Villa’s wait for success in the competition has entered its 58th year.

But the important thing is that you get the right manager in time for the Premier League match against Stoke City on Saturday February 21. It’s at Villa Park – you really should be there.

  66. John,

Telling indeed and one that everyone at AVL will back to the hilt.

We all know where the problems lie now Lambert is gone, Lerner is a very lucky man in respects that the bulk of his wealth was handed to him on a plate from his old man, but all the money in the world will not buy you football knowledge.

Fox made a grave error in backing Lambert two weeks ago and having to sack him so soon after telling us it would be like flipping a coin to sack him followed by these words, –
‘Our focus for the last couple of months has been on making sure we support Paul to make us as successful as possible, and I think we’re heading in the right direction.
He then decides the best way to sack his manager is to do it by phone, surely a text would have sufficed.

Krulak should never be at any football club at board level in fact he should not be at a football club period.

As for Russell god only knows what his role at the club is but looking into his background he is in no position to offer advice in selecting a new manager.

There in a nutshell are the problems we are faced with and we will not be that surprised if they get the next appointment disastrously wrong.

    AVFC RIP

  67. Articulate and scathing that piece on Sherwood, i don’t think the bloke likes him. I can believe everything, footballs a cesspool.
This is arguably the most important managerial appointment in the clubs history and unfortunately we have a pair of dickheads making it.

  68. SWV: As for Russell god only knows what his role at the club

He’s the financial director! 🙂 He keeps the numbers rumbling.

But he’s not interested in football. He was previously with Randy at MBNA.

  69. John,

My point exactly within that four we are expecting the correct decision to be made, we know they will get advice from others but ultimately the final decision will be made at board level and that scares the shit out of me.

    AVFC RIP

  70. Funny to see Faulkner sticking the boot into lambert and exposing all the excuses he has hid behind all this time — raw deal my arrrr

Lennon being linked – he seems like a winner and sets his teams up well – he also seems like a guy the players will mostly enjoy working with so not a bad shout for me

  71. Well the feeling of joy has certainly been replaced by fear now. God knows what the guys at this club are capable off. Just don’t feck it up

In ad ideal world for me, we’d get Eddie Howe. Apparently we want someone who bring through young players.
But, he won’t leave now so maybe get a short term fix like Hoddle, then get Howe in the summer?

I certainly don’t want Sherwood long term. I don’t think he’d be proud to be our manager and I think he thinks he’s a top class manager

I just hope they get a man in ASAP because it’s giving me a headache thinking about it so much 🙂

  72. Runtings,

The truth of what happened has to be somewhere between what Lambert said and what Krulak now states, right? And I suggest that Lambert’s version is closer to the mark – what Krulak is saying is an admittance that the board do not know what they’re doing. They give an inexperienced (Premiership) manager laissez faire treatment and you get the result … rather like giving a child freedom to do more than he should.

The fact is that because of the board’s lack of appreciation of Villa and UK football, they needed a strong and really experienced manager to come in run things. But after the MON experience they thought the McLeish then Lambert options would be better.

Better still, they should have appointed someone on the board to advise on football matters so that the chairman could see the outcomes of a football manager’s decisions and snip them in the bud when needed. Fear (and others) said that a long time ago and the Fear has repeated his suggestion. But the chairman knows best apparently.

It will be interesting (the wrong word, I know!) to see what they come out with now.

  73. SWV,

    Yep – you’re right. It’s a worrying situation.

It could be that unless the players get themselves sorted and play up to their abilities then this season could still go down the plughole quite easily.

But this Sunday’s match is a good opportunity to re-set the record and then bounce off a good win to recovery. They *have* to score on Sunday, and more than one at that i.m.o. to get a proper feeling going.

  74. Well the S H one tea is now hitting the fan…Where will it all end.

I would have more sympathy with Lambert, if he had been more open and honest with the fans, and attempted to get on with them, but his treatment by Fox, only reflects the way he has been…..

Unfortunately, if snensible decision are not made now, then things will probably get worse. Sunday’s match may well be an indicator of where we are and how far adrift the club is. It is now clear that the Bent loan cannot be reversed.

  75. morning all or evening all, as it is were i am in india, 2 weeks through a 3 week holiday, nice and warm no snow 18 -22 in the and 10 at night, , t-shirt weather i tells ya!

well lambo finally went, and now we need a replacement – i think it will be sherwood, as he was up vp not long ago and i don’t / cant think on anyone else that these numpties will go for. i would have minede avram grant and neithe would have price willy.

    http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2015/02/13/8884402/-?

    he him asked apparently !

  76. Really fecked off about Sunday

Haven’t missed a Home game for 9 years in my seats come rain or shine up the Holte. Sat there for 9 bloody years and the ticket office fucked up and sold them to another couple. The only other seats they could offer us was up the Holte was restricted view. Nice to know they couldn’t give a fuck about loyal supporters. Bet the twats in my seat are coming for the first time cus we are close to Wembley. Bet they weren’t there for Blackpool or Bournemouth games.

  77. The more I read and think about Sherwood, the less I want him as our manager. Yes we do need someone with fire to come in and wake everyone up, but Sherwood is tactically inept and we do not have the calibre of players Spurs had when AVB was sacked. The best thing Sherwood did was release the constraints AVB put on them, and it became a game of ‘we have a go, you have a go’. Given that Spurs had a team better in quality than 3/4 of the prem, it proved overall successful. But he didnt have a good record againts sides better than Spurs, fact he got demolished by Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool.

    Pros:
    – Enthusiastic
    – Motivational skills (if you’re in his good books)
    – Believes in youth
    – Straight talker

    Cons:
    – Lack of experience
    – Inept tactically
    – Divisive figure
    – Arrogance
    – Lack of his own background staff

  78. Thinking of all the various facets required by an Aston Villa manager and PROBABLY the only one who measures up is Slaven Bilic who has had ambitions to manage in England for several years, has contacts throughout Europe, knows the English game from his days as a player here, doesn’t stand shite and who’s teams play very good footy. Just an opinion.

  79. Klinsmann has regected us……would love Bilic, great shout.

Has he got the balls to take us on, a decent manager would prob shy away from us. We are not exacly stable.

Sounds like we want to get a permanent manager in place though.

  80. Oh dear, Scott Marshall “We came in to train this morning,we haven`t changed anything in particular”.I would have thought he would have wanted to stamp his mark on things for his one game in charge.I am probably over reacting with that one comment though..Interesting to see the starting eleven on Sunday.

  81. haven’t had the chance to read all the posts but have read Mr Krulaks attempt at denial 🙂 no doubt it could be very damaging to a search for a new manager to have the situation that awaits them written in black and white.
    apparently Lennon not interested either

  82. brasil- he is the defence coach, if he’s been the only coach there since Keane left do you think Lambert has been there much? might be part of the reason our strikers are goal shy, nah there just shit

  83. Have to say that i think its been decided already that Sherwood is the new boss, Fox only knows 3 managers, Lambert, Wenger and Sherwood and unless the catering department orders a 100 weight of frogs legs for Sunday i think it’ll be English fare on offer.

  84. My only hope is Paddy Reilly has some input, if you read the gaurdian article he is our scouting guru who alerted us to Benteke in 2012 and presumably Sanchez and Gil. hopefully he can point out we don’t want a manager who’s main attribute is touching his toes

  85. Steamer,

It’s really a cod’s breakfast situation for an incoming manager.

He won’t want it to be just a firefighting exercise, but that’s what is needed (as I see it) – he’ll want to be in for a long term contract. And I assume that if it *is* a long term contract Lerner will insert a clause saying “only if we escape relegation”.

It all points to an internal firefighting appointment that’s needed till the end of the season … a combination of Sid and Marshall and whoever else. I can’t see anything else working.

  86. I read Nursey.p tweet last night he HJ is we will go 442 on Sunday. Hope so

Marshal has also said we need a manager with existence

    Rules out Sherwood and more

    It’s gunna be Warnock

    Would love Moyes or Rafa

  87. I accept that some of the suggested candidates are unbelievably bad but if you inserted Lamberts name among them you still wouldn’t choose him even three years ago. There’s very little talent, if any, talent among the British managers which has been recognised by even some of the smaller clubs ( Brentford – Rosler, Watford – Swansea – Martinez – Zola + ) and most of the hierachy in the EPL seem content with foreign managers so why do the powers that be at VP want to foist more British crepe on AVFC ? No imagination, no contacts nothing, how many Brits do you see managing continental clubs, Moyes and ……. what a pathetic bunch we have in charge, as if we didn’t already know it.

  88. Wonder if Gabby will select himself on Sunday ?
Can’t believe Klinsmann turned down the opportunity to live in Birmingham. To be honest most of the managers today want everything, inheriting good players, loads of money to spend, huge contracts, whatever happened to seeing the bigger picture such as rebuilding a huge historical institution with massive support and no competition within 80 miles. What was it Tommy Doc said about shirts drying ? You’d think they’d be lining up down Trinity road for the chance to manage Villa.

  89. John

Yes,we are in for a fascinating week.I have a hunch that the next boos will be nobody that has been mentioned yet..

Reflecting on Lambert`s 2 and a half seasons, one of his biggest failings, was his lack of quality staff around him, followed by a lack of an assistant of any kind. The next man will need to be be a real pro, and have his own top notch team ,I flippin hope.
Steamer, yep, the Uk coaches ,don`t inspire me at all.I don`t believe in foreighn for the sake of it,but when you look at what the Dutch coaches have achieved historically then it puts us to shame. That said there are decent UK coaches, but Villa never seem to hire them.
If Curbs gets on board then we may as well shut the club down.
No to Warnock, now he truly is a knob.
If we had the sense to have a football man on the board,a DOF,Technical Director or whatever, then the search could have started weeeks ago,and Fox would have someone to consult.
We can only imagine who Fox is reaching out to.

  90. Maybe a foreign manager is the way to go. I dont think theres a better CV out there than Cesare Prandelli. Did wonders at Fiorentina then led Italy to the Euro final. And he’s available after not having such a good time at Galatasary. Language barrier might be a problem, dunno if he speaks the language, but he would get instant respect.Bring back David Platt as his assistant/translator!

  91. So far Marshall, Southgate, Klinnsman, Lennon, McLaren have all ruled themselves out of the Villa job, AVFC have released a statement saying they are looking to appoint a permanent manager not an interim, It seems a case of when the music stops the one without a chair will get the job, unsurprisingly in our dire situation and with little or no cash to spend, no one with any pedigree wants the job.
I’m getting more than a little nervous with some of the wank names on offer, Curbs, Hoddle, Warnock!!! Fuck me this is dire.
Let’s hope we really haven’t left it too late!

  92. But I don’t see a foreign coach coming over while Villa are in this near-relegation state, Ree, unless it’s a foreign coach who already knows about English football. Grant is a possibility but he seems not to be interested.

  93. I suspect we will see a lower league manager ,who has been around a bit, that is if we don`t go looking for a foreign candidate.
Could Uwe Rosler keep us up,and progress the club.???
Don`t rule out someone that is currently a no 2 at a club.
Eff me I`ve covered just about every option there and will still be wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  94. Ree,
Wasn’t Prandelli the coach who stuck one on Adem Ljajic one of his own subs at Fiorentina and got booted for it. He’ll do.

    B6B,
Apart from a few games at Fulham Jol has a decent record in England, i’d take him over any Brits named too.

  95. I dont know about that Steamer but I read up on his wiki and he seemed to do a great job at Fiorentian before becoming Italy’s head coach.

Iv always liked Martin Jol, think hes tactically good and plays a good style of football. Thought he did well at Fulham before they sold their best players.

  96. With a win % of 37% out of 202 matches in the Premiership his record is way ahead of Lambert’s, I believe.

In the 2005/06 season, Jol almost managed to guide Spurs to their first ever top four finish, which would have earned qualification for the UEFA Champions League, but they were edged by North London rivals Arsenal by just two points on the final day of the campaign. Another impressive fifth place finish followed in 2006/07 before he left London for Bundesliga side Hamburg in 2008.

Jol returned to the Premier League three years later with Fulham, and he comfortably led the Cottagers to ninth position in his first season in charge. In the 2012/13 campaign, the goals of Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov helped Fulham secure their 13th consecutive season at the top level of English football.

  97. John

We all have our views regarding who we DON`T want, that`s the easy part.Remeber these are names that Fox has probably never heard off. However we may be falling into the trap of underestimating Mr Fox,which is always a huge mistake. He handles that flipping a coin interview very badly and is resented for it.However he may pleasantly suprise us in the coming days.

  98. Uwe Rosler should fit right in then 😉

Its been said by me and many others that it would be a worry, and not really a good time to swap idiots. when you have a managerial set up with the football knowledge of ena Ogden you know your in trouble. unless they listen to O’Reilly who seems to know a player.
I can just see them like on x factor in the judges houses sifting through photos saying things like, I like him he got nice eyes

  99. B6,

I’m simply surmising on my own perception of the best fit given the circumstances of where we are in the league.

What Fox does is another thing altogether! 😉 … That rather goes without saying, I think.

  100. Please not Curbishley , I’d rather a Steamers growler took charge!!! Has anyone actually applied or shown any interest?? Everyone asked seems to distance themselves quicker than the Vatican from a dodgy priest!!

  101. b62- its painful but hasn’t that been the case since Mon went? Lerner gives them his hardest job ever line and its bye bye. Anyone in football must see what’s gone on at villa and tut.
One bonus is we could end up with someone with nuts of Iron, alternatively we could get Lambert MK2.

  102. Lerner only has himself to blame for this mess. Any manager worth his salt is going to want money, players, control, his own staff–it goes on. Lerner has torn the middle out of the club and has been left holding the bag. Football is a small community and everyone knows his MO.
The only thing he has in his favour is offering a very large compensation package and then an open check book in the summer. Money does talk.

I think the players gave up on Lambert and much as the fans did and the Hull game was produced to create one thing only and that was Lambert’s sacking.

Hey Steamer, how about Alex Ferguson for 13 games?

  103. In all seriousness i think Jol may well be the best realistic option out there. He got Fulham playing some great football before they sold their best players Dembele and Dempsey. I remember them winning at the Emirates 1-0 and they passed them off the park. He knows the English game, has proper experience and can get players playing to their potential (Berbatov). Imo thats all we need to escape relegation, get our players playing to their potential.

  104. You know i’m beginning to like the idea of Martin Jol.

    Mark,
According to Sol “Im fucking raving mad” Campbell he was a world class defender and he could be a ‘world class manager but clubs expect me to learn the business first, I’d do a good job for Man Unitied if they moved the club to London where their supporters live.’ Off his head mate.

So Marshalls to blame too, all together “We want Marshall out.”

  105. These betting markets are very volatile but Tim Sherwood’s odds have shortened again. 12-1 on with Corals. 5-1 on with Betfair. Suggests he’s nailed on it’ll. Presumably on a massive bonus if he keeps us up. A bit underwhelmed but good luck to him.

  106. Steamer
You really are the font of all knowledge!! As much as i love the who, I don’t want curbs anywhere near VP .
The list seems to get more depressing every time I see it.

  107. Mark, I’d rather have Lambert back with McLeish as his assistant than Sam Allardyce. Only positive thing about him is that he’s not Gareth Southgate but definitely not on my short list.

  108. Hello Steamer. I’ve been away this week and only been scanning this stuff but did I see Churchie on here the other day with a post about Tim Sherwood? I think he wasn’t in favour. Did he give any reasons? Sky Bet and others have suspended betting. Suggests it’s a done deal.

  109. Don’t think so Runts … Sports Mole is saying:

“Aston Villa are understood to have been deterred from making Tim Sherwood their new manager by Chris Ramsey’s appointment at Queens Park Rangers.”

  110. got to agree with Runtins , l have this feeling in my water , or is that the cider ,

steamer , we should have gone to the 99p shop not the 97p one , these glasses are shite , writings still tiny on here

  111. S75,

Villa apparently are looking for a ‘package’ – so as Sherwood’s side-kick has gone elsewhere, Sherwood would come on his own.

Apparently (state Sports Mole) Villa don’T want a one-man band, hence Sherwood is unlikely.

  112. hope so JL that news is on twitter re sherwood – not my choice at all but i could just about take a short term appointment

the up side you would have to try really hard to get worse than the last 3 guys

  113. A duck walks into a bar and asks: “Got any bread?”
    Barman says: “No.”
    Duck says: “Got any bread?”
    Barman says: “No.”
    Duck says: “Got any bread?”
Barman says: “No, we have no bread.”
    Duck says: “Got any bread?”
Barman says: “No, we haven’t got any f*cking bread.”
    Duck says: “Got any bread?”
Barman says: “No, are you deaf?! We haven’t got any f*cking bread, ask me again and I’ll nail your f*cking beak to the bar you irritating b*stard of a f*cking bird!”

    Duck says: “Got any nails?”
    Barman says: “No.”

    Duck says: “Got any bread?

off topic but this just cracked me up on facebook

  114. Well, if this is true about Sherwood in the context of a long-term appointment then I’m worried.

Marshall said that we need experience yet Villa may well be on the point of appointing someone with a few months managerial experience, and that within a comfort zone (Spurs).

But I’ll not lose any sleep over this. Enough has happened at Villa Park this last 4 years to cause me not to be surprised at anything.

  115. JL
to be honest l think we all need to be put out of our misery of who it is , only been a couple of days and lm already fed up with it , lol

jenny try the axe in the back of your car , it really works , lad said he’ll walk home )))

  116. Why Sherwood?I just don`t get it?A novice in Premier League terms, the London media love him,as he is a young `Arry with them, very matey.I know there is a footy grapevine ,but what is it about him?Confused.com.

  117. Well if it’s Tim, I wish him all the the success in the world at us.

Positives on him- He will be honest in interviews. Ripped his players apart after Chelsea beat them instead off” can’t fault there effort”

He will bring though youngsters like he did Kane and Bentelab. Get Grealish starting

    He attacks

Negatives- I don’t know how switched on tactically he is and if all guns bLAZZING Is is the only way he goes.
He seems a bit of a twat

But, could have done worse, could have done better

  118. “He seems a bit of a twat” brillliant Frem.I wish him all the best, because he is our twat.Media love him though,so he will never be off the radio or tv screen. His backroom people should be interesting as he has lost 2 to Quality Rarely Present,Ferdy and Ramsey.

Tim Sherwood`s Claret and Blue Army.

Tim is a bit iffy though?A bit like Nigel,or Quentin.

  119. Same here. I’ll just be glad to get my passion back and not actually want us to lose games in the hope It will end Lambert

I think he’d bring Lez Ferdinand in so that would help up top.

  120. Got that wromg
    QPR………..Quality Presemt Rarely.

He wll be on a large slice to keep us up,as was Lambert I think.

Plus bonuses for league position etc.

He is a very arroganrt or very confident person,I believe. But then there are a lot of this type in pro sport.
Not a “nice”bloke, but if he ships out a lot of the wage thieves and saves us this season, then I will be happy.I expect Grealish to get games.

  121. Andrew P,
Churchy did post, only a couple of lines and that was it. He posts very occasionally on TVB.
Irrespective of his abiities i expect Sherwood to give the club a lift just by his personality, lets face it Lambert wasn’t exactly a bundle of laughs was he ? One of the things that worries me about him is that Laandenaaars rarely prosper outside of the metrollops and without his cockenee coaches who will he be appointing ? possibly an opportunity for an ex Villan.

  122. Sounds like it’s Sherwood, doesn’t it? His appointment wouldn’t set the world on fire, but hopefully, he’ll do well by Villa.
Not expecting much, though. More likely get relegated and Sherwood will gain experience with Villa in the Championship.

Fox isn’t fooling anyone, probably had it sweet at Arsenal. For a start, he needs to get off his high horse.

  123. Steamer

I think he will be like most and appoint mates of former team mates. We will have a mini London firm at BMH.
Lovely jubblyme old san,cap or Rosie mate?Dontcha just love the cockerneeesss?Maybe Dennis Wise, especially for you Steamer.
We have done ok with London boys,Barton,Gregory is Southern there must be more.Townsend,Ugo,come on you Laandan boys.

  124. Trin,
I’m just hoping he gives the club a lift and i actually think he will, long term i don’t know, i think he’s just another example of the boards football ignorance, all they seem to know is Laandaan and the USA, no-where else exists.
I expect Lerner promised him a few bob to spend in the close season because it doesn’t look like anyone else was interested in the job.

  125. Agree Steamer. The Sherwood appointment,if is happens,is just confusing.I have an open mind, and hope he is a success, but why him?On what basis, what criteria.?I can see Fox at the Presser,he is so slick and will come out with “Tim shares our vision”
After all these years of Lerner, what is this vision Randy?

  126. As long as Wise bought his wig with him, have you seen it ? You really would say love a duck, it’d be too big for Vinnie Jones head never mind Wise’s.

  127. Thanks Steamer. Always liked Churchill’s posts. He was entertaining and unpredictable.
I hope Sherwood can shake up our dressing room and get Benteke out of his trance – should be enough to keep us up.

  128. Tim Sherwood – how low have we fallen. 5 months managing his mates at spurs and all of a sudden he’s good enough for Aston Villa. Even Lambert had more experience – he actually achieved bringing Norwich up the leagues – and the job was too big for him . There is no way that Sherwood has the all round skills or management experience to take on Aston Villa at this stage of his career . When you look at the experience the other new managers have got of scrapping out of the bottom then his appointment looks even more bizarre . I’m astounded that RL has entrusted our premiership safety to a novice manager given that going down will knock 200 million off the purchase price of the club . (According to today’s sports journalists )
    Very worried.

  129. Fair chance of Wemberlee, i expect us to smash Leicester. Lambert would crawl out of the woodwork and claim all the credit.
I hope the fans unite until the end of the season and cheer the team on, VP is awesome at times and i have a feeling they will be the 12th man once more.

  130. I think any change of face would give the club a lift / but it will be temporary . Maybe that is enough to keep us up but we will be walking the right rope again I fear .

Andrew – Churchill said anyone but Sherwood – villa strike again

  131. Jen,
Footballs getting harder and harder to understand, most of the personalities involved are disgusting individuals, its the fans i feel sorry for ( except the vermin ).

  132. The Tommy Doc situation was similar in 1967, he came in and by force of personality turned things around and saved us in remarkable circumstances, 12 months later we were down the bottom again and he was sacked.

  133. Steamer- Don’t expect us to win Sunday

That Marshall seems Lamberk Mark 2. His interview was Lambert All over again. Said we haven’t changed in preparation, and get this

” HES ASKING LAMBERT for advice about Sunday.

He’s been sacked for a reason FFS !!!!!

  134. jen I think thats Krulaks way of stopping damage whilst recruiting and protecting his buddy Lerner. He hasn’t said a word for years and now he come galloping in to defend Randy and the villa franchise, Knob head

  135. “Fair chance of Wemberlee, i expect us to smash Leicester. Lambert would crawl out of the woodwork and claim all the credit.
I hope the fans unite until the end of the season and cheer the team on, VP is awesome at times and i have a feeling they will be the 12th man once more.”

when you’ve walked the dog have a night cap and a lie down the excitements getting to you

  136. fuck me he’s come to the right place for crabs

“Ramsey previously worked with Sherwood at Spurs and will now need to find a new coach to work with at Villa, with ex-Chelsea No.2 Ray Wilkins a possible option.”

  137. He was the first choice of new Villa CEO Tom Fox, who has been given a free reign by owner Randy Lerner to run the club.

According to The Mirror, Royalty no less! Will he ‘reign’ for a long time or will he fail to deliver with his free rein?

  138. He hasn’t been appointed yet and if true to form, talks will break down 11th hour like they did for QPR and WBA. Can’t believe they’d throw us in the fire with a novice who doesn’t have his coaching badges yet .

  139. Morning all you Sherwood Foresters! 🙂

As you see, I’m starting to take the opti view that Robin Hood has arrived. The Sheriff of Nottingham (and all the Marshalls!) have had their way for too long and we now need a people’s champion – at least Sherwood might remind us of the best days of Big Ron.

    … but for how long?

In fact, I see that Damien has written a leader on AVB stating that he doesn’t believe TS will be appointed. But (believing that Steamer was right) it would seem to me that TS always was the intended backstop should Lambert have to go. If that is the case, it just shows how conniving they are at Villa Towers, blurting out things about spinning coins while doing something entirely different. Ah, well, that’s the game for you I suppose…

  140. Jenny,

While you could be right, I’d hate to equate Aston Villa with Albion or QPR! 😉

I’d hope that anyone would see that Villa is a tasty morsel for anyone to take on – a much bigger proposition than the two just mentioned and one that would suit someone with ambition. The applicant might forego some of his demands just to be able to take on the job.

Whether TS is the right person is another thing … I have some reservations, but if he is appointed then we have to back him as I see it.

  141. John , I hope they don’t meet his demands / how can he have great demands when he’s had 5 months and the sack on his CV ? 🙂
Nothing makes sense – the dialogue from AV and their decision making . I never thought I’d see the day when I’d be bemoaning us not getting Tony Pullis but this has become reality !

  142. The Vital Villa poll states that Kilinnsman is the most-wanted manager (25%) with Moyes second (18%), Laudrup third (13%) and Sherwood fourth (11%).

    But “others” get 19%!

    Martin Jol only attracts 2%.

  143. Jenny,

I can’t help but agree with you, but this is par fro the course with this Villa management. Arrogant is not a good enough word to describe them really – they’re at a distance from the fans and look like not disappointing with their record to date.

*If* all turns out well, though, what will we say …

  144. just seen the Marshall interview and i’m horrified, WTF does he think Lambert was fired for ? To continue with the same ideas is ridiculous and to consider phoning the clown for ideas is bordering on the insane. Don’t let this idiot anywhere near the changing room, get McAndrew and Cowans to pick Sundays team.
    My team –
    Guzan:
    Hutton Vlaar Clark, Cissy:
    Bacuna, Sanchez, Grealish, Delph:
    Gil:
    Benteke.
Subs from – Burke, Given, Lowton, Weimann, Baker, Okore, Sinclair.

  145. Well folks we all knew this was a car crash waiting to happen. Ive stated many times that i had no faith in the owners choice making and yet again we are picking from left overs. Two poor decisions, lamberts new deal and not moving to change things while there was still options out there and time for them to effect change. Its going to be a rough ride. Unless fox is a genius? Hmmmm

  146. Steamer,

Well, you’re right, but I’d guess that the players will be the ones in control *if* there’s anything about them. Whatever’s been said, they’ll want to prove it’s not them that’s been the problem, I guess.

… and they’d fancy a visit to Wembley too!

  147. Mark,

    Again, you’re right.

But the problem for me was that Lambert’s sacking came too late to effect a properly-considered replacement. Not many proven managers would want to come in to do a rescue act, whereas Sherwood has nothing to lose.

  148. Sorry to keepharking on about 1967 but does anyone remember playing the vermin at VP and Tommy Doc led the team out up to the Holte End, got down on his knees and bowed, the Holte went wild and his actions completely deflated the vermin both team and fans, Villa pissed all over them with big Dave Simmons netting in an easy 1-0 win. I’d love to see BFR with a microphone in front of the Holte giving it the big frog and whipping them into a frenzy. Villans identify with BFR and giving the team/fans that buzz could make the difference. I’m going 3-1 to Villa now that useless b-o-s is out of VP. you never know Ron may even do his version of My Way.

  149. I hope you’re right about Sherwood’s goal scoring input – but he had different players at spurs – players who he knew well and decent coaches – AV are a different kettle of fish. We don’t have good coaches and he has no back room staff now Ramsey has gone QPR . And who knows how much of the spurs up turn in fortune wasn’t a combo of Sherwood and Ramsey.

  150. Frem, Pulis would have been ideal for us where we are now. He would have virtually guaranteed survival and would definitely have kicked Gabby and co into shape. Long term maybe not, but give Pulis the rest of this season and all of next and we would definitely been in far better shape because he’s a trouble shooter and always sorts out problems created by other managers, and sales of club shop tat would have doubled overnight.

  151. Pullis turned round CP last season because
1 he knows how to organise teams
2 he has experience of going into a new club where he knows no-one or the systems
This is what Tim Sherwood doesn’t have .

  152. steamer thats probably why he wont come, one chat with the cars salesman and he’d say piss off. Marshall seems like a deer in the headlights, giving support to Lambert and a big come and get me when you have a job at this point does us no good. If what he says is true then the squad is in morning. We have no leaders bar senderos, I believe Lambert lost faith in his own methods and began listening to every tom dick and harry while not understanding the problem, leadership. I think he wanted to be everyones pal.

  153. oh fuck , steamer bring them scrapers over mate , my full english is on the kitchen wall ATM , all i heard was card ? flowers? chocolates ?
think my reply didnt help “, FFS l married ya” could do with the game today , l know its raining but l think l will wash the car !!! no one told me it St Vals day , but isnt that for young lads trying to get a legover ???

Mark l think everyone and his dog knows you couldnt trust them ejits at VP picking a new manager , and yes Marshalls statement frightened the fuck out of me , as Frem said , thats why Lamberk got sacked with them tactics ,

Matt loving the new site especially the spell checker , every time l put lambert in it changes it to Cunt ! and Tim Sherwood it comes out “Aving a laff , !!

well have a good weekend all , hope no one else has forgot ,

Jenny xxxxx will go to toolman on way to pub tomorrow and pick up an axe for you ,xxxx

  154. steamer all valid points, but even an idiot needs conviction for others to follow him 😉

St75 sorry to bother you with the bleeding obvious, just unerving with this sudden ruch of happy clapping from steamer. Maybe we need a manager with and axe in the corner of his office

  155. It’s still not a stone certainty that TS is appointed, is it?

Apparently Villa want to check out other options before deciding, and TS has got to find an assistant. I think Villa are just delaying things until TS *does* find that assistant.

  156. Don’t know why theirs a delay, TS has seen us play at least twice so he knows how bad we are. Look well if he says no, you can imagine, ‘Dear Paul, Maybe we were a tad hasty.’

    Happy clapper indeedy.

  157. 🙂 Yes, Steamer, but that TS has to find an acceptable assistant is a *slight* sticking point isn’t it?

Anyway, that lot up top wouldn’t know a good assistant from Tom Thumb, I would think!

  158. Pullis is working wonders at West Brom – like he did at Palace. If only they’d pressed the button sooner .
This is what we need “Tony Pullis made that goal fur them – frightened Sessignin to gojng inside from the touch lines – directing the move – and then the goal comes – all credit to him”. Also , Brown Adeye -scoring . Praying someone can do that with our lot .

  159. Mornng Lifers

I am quite underwhelmed by this possible or probable appointment.

I wish him well if it`s Sherwood. We are choosing from a very small pool.
Experience is everything,it may work, but have no faith in Lerner and Fox to get it right, but would be delighted to be wrong.
The Hull game was a greatest hits in a negative sense of the last 4 years. No organisation, tactical platform to work from, awful players underperformoing, lack of purpose and confusion..and that was just the warm up.
If Sherwood can take us forward from this then great. He doesn`t seem to be a choirboy or a likeable fella, but if we win matches, then that will change the negativity that has dragged us down for 4 years.
To sum up it might work, and I hope it does, but a very strange choice even considering the small group of candidates available. It`s a huge stride away from the old school names we usually are said to be after, but by not acting in November of December, these are the deperate circumstances we find ourselves in.A huge gamble.

  160. And I posted that at 1-0 for WBA . We can get Benteke playing – it’s all about confidence and he got his opportunity . Pullis gave him the chance with Berahino – which is what we should have done with Bent and Benteje

  161. After MON left and even up to McKnob departing names were bandied about and folk, myself included, were poo pooing Rafa, The Brolly and others as not good enough, they were light years better than whats coming. It shows how far we’ve declined as a club and i think we’re not yet at the bottom of Lerners barrel. I do think Sherwood will keep us up if appointed, but his personality is disruptive, i wouldn’t mind betting that within two years we’ll be searching for his replacement.

  162. B6,

I am a bit surprised that some seem to be in a kind of fear of Sherwood as being a rough-edged person who is likely to say what he thinks.

Wasn’t Ron Saunders of a similar style?

We wait to see if this apparent appointee meets with the approval of the fans, and I take Jenny’s concern that his managerial work so far has been in relatively home territory for him. But if he does come and is able to transform the players as he did at Spurs, then I would think he’ll be very welcome.

  163. Steamer

They need to keep Tim on a short leash,Fox must monitor him in action at BMH,as he can create a toxic atmosphere.allegedly.We don`t need another Culverhouse/Karsa situation. This may have been over stated by some with an agenda, but he comes with a clean slate in my mind.I hope he does well, and I wish him well.

  164. Could have waited until after my post.
Yes, as i was saying, Sherwood Out.
Well we’ve got to give him our backing, its shite or bust now, Lamberts buggered us up so good luck to TS.

  165. I’m for one pretty happy with it. Could have got worse in

He will be so diffident to Lambert. Hell attack and be honest in interviews. He won’t take crap so Gabby and Wiemamn are fucked. Grealish and Robbinson will play

I’m looking forward to it and hope he can build in the summer

He’s not perfect that’s for sure. Has a lot to learn tactically but he wil get us fired up

Looking forward to that drive to Newcastle now 🙂

  166. John

I don`t care what he says,to a point,it`s not his honesty that concerns me.It`s his narrow experience that is my concern, but experience isn`t everything and we have had a bellyful of so called experienced managers.Good Luck Sherwood.

  167. Exactly John, absolutely NO-ONE wanted Saunders and halfway through his debut season you could see why, but then we became unstoppable. Personally i couldn’t stand the bloke or his ideas on football, the first game after he betrayed us some knob shoved a petition for his return under my nose in the Villa Tavern, hope he recovered fully.

  168. Yes he did a MON and walked out on us as we approached the QFs of the European Cup.

Remember that? When you had to win the league to enter it?

Come on Sherwood wake the bloody club up.

  169. “Tim had a fantastic career at Tottenham, not only in his brief spell as first-team manager but, just as importantly, in the role he played in developing young talent.

The club are excited to have secured the services of one of English football’s most highly sought after managers.

Had hoped the BS would end though.

  170. We have a man who will attack, a man who won’t be afraid to let players express them selfs. We have a manager who will be honest and play our youth

He’s in the complete opposite style to The Berk which is great

  171. Welcome Mr Sherwood and good luck. Boy oh boy have you got a big job to do. I for one will be going tomorrow after my boycott so far this season. Big 13 games coming up so we need to get behind TS and the team got a feeling it’s going to be a roller coaster ride.

  172. Forget the media hype lads and ladies, lets get behing TS and judge him by what happens on the field. The results.Fingers crossed.Off to enjoy 4 days of Carnaval.

  173. Not ecstatic at all about this decision but I do think he has enough to get us out of relegation. He will have everyone’s support for a good while now. It will be a bumpy ride no doubt lets hope it works out.

  174. He wouldn’t be my choice but he’s here now – we have no option but to get behind him 100 %and hope he can breathe confidence and positive energy into our players . It will be fascinating to see how they perform under a new manager . Can’t wait for the game tomorrow – and it’s a long time since I said that ! UTV

  175. Well, here’s to hoping Sherwood can come in and do a job. He’ll obviously have something to prove, and I doubt anyone’s position will be safe. Going to be a very interesting ride.

  176. l was getting texts off an albion lad we were trying to tap pulis up yesterday ,
has anyone heard how the ticket sales are going for tomorrow , only lm getting asked about meeting in the George to watch the game !!

Mark dont worry about steamer , l knock some sense into him tomorrow ,
Is marshall still in charge tomorrow ,

jenny got you a roofers hammer , looks more menacing XXXX (got one meself ) might give steamer a tap with it tomorrow sounds like he’s going soft ,

if you have a washing machine that packs up , before you get rid , take the drum out , then unscrew the plastic casing and take off , leave the belt wheel on , and take the plastic bits out which are inside the drum , then stand on that belt wheel and put a couple of house bricks to balance it , put some logs/wood inside and light , and because of the stainless steel when lit will go a nice blueish colour and the heat it throws out is incredible , nice for summer night BBQs ect , if l was able to put a pic up you could see what it looks like ,

  177. Sherwood has a platform to make a name for himself, he divides peoples opinions but if he turns Villa around then the football worlds his lobster.

  178. Ian,
In honour of our new cockenee manager i thought a delboyism would be suited gov, hence lobster.
Whats your opinion on our new leader ? Pretty divided on the blogs.

  179. New AM.

SWINDON Town are delighted to announce two new additions to the first team coaching staff.

Luke Williams joins as a First Team Coach while Michael Cooper will fulfil the role of Sports Scientist.
