Matthew Lowton has signed for Aston Villa from Sheffield United indicating the start of the revolution of the club’s creaky defence which has been more than porous last season.

With Lowton representing the kind of player Paul Lambert has a history of signing – young, good value, and from lower leagues – it will be interesting to see how he gets on with the team. Given the fact that Karim El Ahmadi has also signed, it seems to show that Lambert’s transfer policy will be diverse to say the least.

Lowton has established himself as a high quality young right back having been at Sheffield United since the age of nine. Derby County were reported to be interested in the player last season but it is the Villans who have won the race for his signature.

Lambert has reportedly also told Alan Hutton that this signing does not indicate that his Villa career is over, contrary to some earlier reports after the manager took over at Villa Park, with Lowton’s arrival signifying an increase in competition for places – something that Villa were desperate for after operating a paper thin squad in recent times.
