If recent speculation from a variety of sources is to be believed, the careers of two full backs at Aston Villa – Alan Hutton and Stephen Warnock – may well be drawing to a close.

Whilst the information reported in the Express & Star about Warnock’s exclusion from the friendly squad against Werder Bremen is a tad ambiguous, it is clear that Paul Lambert is envisaging that the defence needs fixing. Lambert stated “There’s no update on Stephen Warnock or anything like that. It’s just that that’s the squad I chose to bring and that’s all that I’ll say about it really.”

After several years where the back four have been decidedly poor, a change would be a great idea. Whether the new defence will be any better is something only time will tell.

The somewhat predictable headlines at ESPN point Warnock towards Sunderland, invariably because of the fact that Martin O’Neill does have a propensity for wanting to bring his former players with him. Will this actually happen though? It may well be a possibility, but who knows what might transpire – this certainly isn’t the first former player linked with our former Ulster born manager, and I doubt it will be the last.

So if Warnock is to leave, it may well be greeted with happiness given that fans have questioned his performances over the past few years, and many see better, cheaper players as the future.

Coupling this with rumours of a sale of Richard Dunne, the defence may well be totally different in the coming months as Lambert’s revolution continues at pace.
