Aston Villa have announced that Gordon Cowans will be stepping down from his role as a first team coach in order to fill the void of reserve team manager left by Kevin MacDonald’s exit from the club.

Full details are not available, but it is understood from sources at the club that Cowans will take over the oversight of both the reserve and youth teams.

Some fans may consider such a move as a backwards step for Cowans, though with Paul Lambert bringing in his own managerial backroom for the first team, such a move may actually provide positive progress for Villa. It also means that Cowans can take the next step in terms of honing his managerial experience – if this is something he is actively wanting to do – and learn more about the club.

So, Sid, as a long time servant of the club we wish you all the very best in your new role, just as we wish Paul Lambert all the very best as he starts the necessary overhaul of the club after a series of poor seasons.
