With the rumours all over the internet and on TV awash with rumours and counter rumours about Clint Dempsey, will the talented American player move to Villa Park?

This morning sources have suggested Villa have made a bid and that Fulham have accepted it with other sources then going on to say that Dempsey has rejected the move in favour of holding out for a move to Liverpool.

With Liverpool light on finances after last season’s splurges on over £100m worth of players by former manager Kenny Dalglish, money may not be available to purchase players to the tune of further big signings. The north west club have been linked with a loan move for Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge, a more probably option in financial terms at least.

Getting back to Dempsey, the player had previously stated his intention to play Champions League football after a successful campaign with Fulham, but links with Sunderland and other clubs in more recent times clearly show that Dempsey’s ambitions have scaled back, most likely due to no forthcoming offers from clubs in the Champions League.

With Dempsey seemingly burning, or rather having burnt, bridges at Fulham, a move may be in the west London club’s best interests. Villa fans will certainly be interested to keep track on progress of a player few fans may have foreseen moving to the club even as recently as yesterday.

There will invariably be more twists and turns to this saga as we approach the deadline, but the message to fans is clear – the board are doing the best they can to get players in at a good value, and that the move for Dempsey clearly shows that Villa will not solely be shopping in the bargain basement.
