Very short, just a discussion thread. I’ll do better. All I can say was Ollie was robbed, but happy enough with 2-0 at the half after Young Boys were looking threatening.

  1. Glad to see carlos back, think it’s our best back 4
    Goal for ramsay great news
    Beundi gets another few minutes
Wycombe next week players are going to get minutes
Dingles in between, be some atmosphere remembering GARY SHAW on Saturday now he was a legend

  2. That was a good outing. Real shame Ollie got robbed, but lots of class throughout the match, and good to see goals getting spread around.

Very good couple of days’ football.

  3. Lots of positives tonight:
Ramsey getting sharper and starting to carry the ball forward again instead of always laying it off.
Duran showing that he really does have the talent to be a top striker and competing for the ball more too.
Onana showing he more than a defensive midfielder. Three goals in his first 4 games is an impressive start.
Buendia looked really keen and full of energy still. . . . you wouldn’t bet against Emery making a class player of him.
When you an bring on players of the quality of Barkley, Buendia and Maatsen at the end of the game, you begin to see that we do have more strength in depth now

  4. Anyone getting bored with all these wins,we look so comfortable, takes an odd stray pass from carlos to wake us up
Seriously it’s brilliant, robbo you left out cash mings kamara Bailey

  5. Wonderful result, fully deserved. But we have definitely been robbed. Ollie’s goal at best, VAR can only guess that the ball hit his hand because replays showed no proof whatsoever. Big Dhon scored another beauty but again VAR decided a hand ball missed by the ref 5 minutes earlier was valid reason enough to chalk it off. UEFA are doing their level best to avoid promoting this competition by ruling out fine goals. But then again, aren’t they based in Switzerland?

  6. Thought we comfortably controlled the game with the exception of about 20 minutes mid way through the 2nd half which was more even as we eased off. And as roBB0 says, Big Jhon’s card should be retracted as his goal was disallowed.

  7. A better performance again from Onana. My half time deliberations centred around Bogarde at FB since their danger moves came down his side. Unai saw it too and changed things around. Tielemans with another great game. But it was a team performance to be proud of and I’m going to pour a glass of claret.

  8. Yes James, I bet Unai has started work this evening on preparing for Saturday’s game against Wolves.

Another celebration was the CLEAN SHEET. They’ve been missing of late.

  9. Now it’s properly underway, this article lays out how many points you’re likely to need to qualify automatically for the next stage of the Champion’s league, and how many points you’d probably need to reach the play offs.
    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/13216638/champions-league-state-of-play-how-many-points-do-teams-need-to-qualify-for-the-knockout-rounds
Basically, we’d need 4 more wins (plus possibly a draw too) to automatically go through to the next stage as one of the top 8, but only need 2 more wins (plus possibly a draw) to be one of the 16 teams needing to win a home and away play off in order to progress to the last 16.
So. . . . just 2 more wins needed to probably put us through to the play offs.
With only 8 games to be played, there’s every chance that goal difference will play a part, so we may yet come to rue the incorrect ruling out of Ollie’s goal.

  10. Interesting article R0bBO. The computer predictions can be monitored on a points per game basis as we proceed. Points required for top 8 position (16) equates to an average of 2 points per game. Something we’ve been achieving since Unai arrived. Points required for top 24 position (10) equates to an average of 1.25 points per game. We’ve got to be confident of reaching the play offs with a chance of finishing top 8 don’t you think???

  11. .r0bb0, If Ollie”s goal had stood, then the future of the game would have been different. Therefore the third goal might not have stood. Conversely, YBs might have scored, etc, etc.

  12. So, what do you think Emery will do? Go for the 4 wins and a tie or go for the 2 wins and a tie and rest up some of the players and go into the last 16.

  13. Dingles at weekend, does carlos stay in,does Bailey get in starting 11,never mind duran, thank god its emery choices
Read lot stick for bogarde ,me apart from first 15mins he settled in,it’s hardest position to play for villa under emery
First round of champions league over few surprises celtic Monaco good results arsenal city Barcelona poor, roll on the Germans in few weeks

  14. Ian, Emery seems to have shown far more faith in his team than I suspect any of us would have done over the past 2 years, so my guess is that he absolutely believes we have a chance of making the top 8, and I’d guess he’ll strive for that until it’s no longer mathematically possible.
We’ve beaten some of the best teams in Europe (in the Premier league), so who’s to say he’s wrong to go for it?
I don’t think there are many fans who’d criticise him for resting players for the domestic cup games though.

  15. Plug, yes we’ve been achieving the target 2 points per game, but how does the quality of the Champion’s league compare with the Premier league?
Yes, there are more ‘elite’ teams, but are the lesser teams the equivalent of lower half premier league teams?

  16. Winding up for the game today. Fixtures are coming thick and fast. I’ll be heading to VP later. Expecting a tough match and in so doing I think I’ve answered r0BB0’s question about the relative strengths of European lesser teams compared to the lower half of EPL teams.

Looking forward with interest to team selection. Feel sure he’ll start with Ollie and I’d like to see Ned (or Cash – he’s back in training) at RB. But whatever Unai does is fine by me.

  17. Good run of games, big squad no reason to burn out early
Would love to see a run of clean sheets again, maybe a defender score a goal or 2,mcginn rogers a d Bailey gey off the mark,
