Derby day is here, and Villa want all three points, thank you very much. Can we get them without Gabby?

  1. all these summer signings from bruce are really standing out, sorry take terry out of that at least a bit of heart and effort in him ,snodgrass 40 thou, elmo 30 thou definetly not worth it as the shampoo add goes because i am worth it

  2. Well i guess its to be expected from a Derby game.
Last 25 minutes we finally got on top and could easily have won it.
    Good to see Jedinak back

  3. Roberts should 100% have been sent off at the end. Bad refereeing.
Not that it would have made a difference at that stage
Overall I thought the referee did ok. Got the balance right

  4. Onomah had a very good game last week by all accounts, and he has showed talent till now. Today he was very disappointing.

But boy did we miss Gabby! 😀

Poor match though. Preston should be better.

  5. A shame we approach, not for the first time, fixtures like this as if we are playing at Man City away.An under dog mentality from the manager.A little frustrated, but this is SB,so I am not suprised,he isn’r going to change now is he.?Anyway on to Preston,I predict an open high scoring game

  6. Well, a little disappointed. After all I wanted 4-1.
I can’t complain too much though. Like B6toBrazil said, a leopard doesn’t change his spots.
On the plus side no one got hurt.

  7. On a different note, the MLS have started their playoffs. The league is improving in leaps and bounds and have had crowds over 70,000 on occasion.
Vancouver play tonight against Seattle. Check out the highlights tomorrow. Root for Vancouver Whitecaps of course. 🙂

  8. JL,

Onomah could be a very good player. Just seems to run hot and cold.

    Ian,

Let’s hope Kodjia is okay. The way he was reacting to the ankle didn’t make me feel good.

  9. B6,

Definitely outworked today. Not sure if the idea is that we were comfortable with the draw, or that blues’ scoring woes would likely lead to a 1-0 if we didn’t over-commit.

  10. B6: “An under dog mentality from the manager.”

My take is that he’s just got it in his mind that there has to be consistency, so there won’t be any great matches, it will just be a long slog to achieve the target. And with 32 matches still to go I think that’s a wise approach. After all, he should know!

And this was vs Blews, the hated fixture. As was the Wolves match when they were clearly psyched up to beat us. As I say, I’d expect Villa’s performance to be a bit different against Preston.

  11. Codger

It doesn’t look good as he went over on the same ankle as before.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Davis and Hogan leading the attack these next few weeks.

  12. In the end SB got what he set out to get. One point whilst hoping he could nick all 3. Johnstone, Jota and Gallagher could all have taken the 1 point off us.

For me it was 2 points dropped. SHA are 1 placed above the relegation zone FFS. Why wait until the 75th minute to try and nick it? Codger as the loan striker didn’t work. Onomah looked lost as the game passed him by. Hourihane wasn’t at his best either. I’d hoped we might have attacked them from the off with commitment but this is SB’s modus operandi….defensive. His pre match presser told us what to expect and yep, that’s what we got. We will see at the end of the season what these 2 dropped points count for. Maybe he was compensating for the lack of energy in some ageing legs.

As previously stated by the manager, promotion needs an average of 2 points per game. We were already behind the curve and now we are even further. If we get 3 points at Preston I’ll calm down. Well Brentford managed it yesterday but we won’t playing like today.

  13. John, your comment about Wolves being psyched up to beat us is interesting.

Whilst I agree that Wolves were quicker, faster, hungrier than all of the Villa players, the question is “why?” Isn’t that Bruce’s job to prepare 46 times to beat the opposition with a fired-up team?

If you look back at last season, the 3 promoted teams were a significant cut abound Villa, and whilst we may end up getting promoted we have no nucleus of a squad that could survive

  14. Paul,

I asked that question about Villa’s approach to the Wolves match as well, but it’s a match that past now.

    Plug,

As to “As previously stated by the manager, promotion needs an average of 2 points per game. We were already behind the curve and now we are even further.”, if you were to take the last 11 matches only then 22 points from those means we’re on course. We’ll see about the Preston match! 🙂

  15. JL
if you were to take the last 11 matches only then 22 points from those means we’re on course.

    Statistics, statistics and damned lies!!

  16. Ian,

Come on nothing, Ian! In my opinion, the season didn’t really start for Villa until the Norwich match. That’s where we found the basis of a reasonable team as I see it, therefore we should take the time since then as the measure of what’s being achieved. Or not as the case may be.

    Plug,

    😀

  17. So far Villa has had a win rate of 42%. In order to reach Bruce’s number of 2 points per game they need a win rate of 72%. I didn’t take draws into consideration. All the other teams have the same constrictions on them. So 2 points a game is a moot point.
I agree the Norwich game was a turning point but you can’t disregard the start of the season.

  18. The league is tight. Losses are magnified. The best case scenario is everyone tying only Villa winning. I think it’s going to be tight the whole year. Not necessarily 2 points per game needed.

  19. And Watford finished second with 89 the previous season.

So if 89 is normal for second place we are on course. However, 93 or 94 points would be a better target to go for.

  20. Evening all, my thoughts on today – In a derby game against the knuckle draggers then as long as we don’t lose, then that is good for both the team and fans. Lose and the emotional effect is enormous.
Thought the team played well in general but a couple of players weren’t at the races today, maybe the occasion got to them as they hadn’t encountered that type of atmosphere before. Or the flying water bottles and those stupid things handed out to all noses.
Once SB made the changes and put Jedi in with Whelan as holding players, that allowed more freedom to other midfielders and we saw a more aggressive and attacking display and two crossbar rattlers.
I would say that as we are still in 6th position as things stand, we are a vast improvement on last season and as a team seem to be growing in stature with the experienced players coming more to the fore. As the youngsters gain in experience we should have a pretty well rounded team with a good mix of youth and experience in the coming weeks and leading to the orgasmic climax of the season. Can I say “orgasmic climax”?
So, I am not unhappy overall, although as I think we all agree, there is still a way to go yet and some fine tuning of the team. Davis looked superb when he came on. Oh that we could rely on Jack G to produce the goods like he is surely able to do.

Hope all Villans came home safe.
Onwards to Preston …… who remembers going up there from the 70’s?
    oldvilla

  21. OldVilla, good post. Based on how we started the season I’m delighted to be in 6th and a handful of points off the top.

To add to the comments on poor performances, it was Kodjia’s worst game for The Villa. Does the guy ever look up? Clearly not…so selfish. In the 1st half Hourihane was free on the edge of the box….just needed a simple pass…but what does the idiot do, not ever look up, go back the other way against 2 defenders and lose the ball. I respect a striker that’s greedy, but not one that’s 90% stupid.

Why did SB bring Hogan on as a left winger? He was lost.

  22. For me Hourihane made one stupid mistake, otherwise he was our bezt player. His frees are money. He would have scored if Terry had not slightly deflected one free kick. Who would you have wanted taking that last free kick? Also thought he made a few great sliding blocks on edge of box.

Davis is a stud, he has to start the next game. I agree with resting him maybe after 2 to 3 consecutive games. Spurs lad a joke again. That’s 5 times this season for me. Ship him back…..

  23. It looks like Mark King is not posting anymore… Did something happen as I loved his comments?

Looks likes this blog has lost a lot of posters that do not like SB in favor of John Lerwill’s condescending opinion of us. May be best for JL to continue his ‘Bruce fav’ as you’ve lost one more.

  24. VillaMd.
Don’t know where you get the JL ‘condescending’ idea from. Unworthy comment.
I miss Mark’s comments on here too and enjoyed the banter between him and JL.
If anti SB posters have stopped commenting, it’s probabaly out of embarrassment because results are better than expected/predicted.
I don’t think that would stop Mark mind you . . . . he seemed to hold honest views and was more than capable of admitting if he felt he needed to change them.
Would be good to see him back

  25. villa md
    good posts above
like sitting in 6th position [think derby and ipswich have game in hand as well so we could go down to 8th] after a year in charge is stand out management from bruce ,never mind all money spent, cant be easy turning players like hogan from goal scorers to how would you describe him left winger

  26. It boggles the mind when you see all that talent arrive only for all of them to lose their boots. Bedding in at Villa is a long term enterprise. A commendable unbeaten streak but littered with ties and a clanger. Not ruthless by any means. Still in a playoff position so what to worry—right. :-/

  27. Ian
As far as needing a win rate of 72% is concerned, it’s more than that now.
We’re 7 points off top & 6 points off second & 5 points off third.
    There’s only 4 points between 12th & 4th.
There will be injuries for the teams with smaller squads to deal with so it’s not straight forward for sure, but we can’t afford to drop many more points.
Sheffield United top, who’d have thought it.
Need to win the next two to make up for today.

  28. What’s all this talk about orgasms and climax change?
I must say the climax has been odd lately.
I missed the game, computer played up 10 minutes into match. Sounds like it underwhelmed most anyway.

  29. Trin,

The game was crapp. Villa were poor. Our performances seem to be better when SB sets up in an attacking vein. Yesterday was all about defence…….yet again, until the last 15 minutes when he changed it and we started to look like a threat. Too little too late for me.

Personally, I’m not interested in P3, P4, P5 or P6. It’s P1 or P2 we need. Spud needs to pick a formation that attacks all teams and not just the Burtons and Barnsleys of this league. SHA were treated like Barca yesterday.

  30. C’mon guys, this was a derb7y … anything happens in derbies does it not?

I’m more interested (outcome-wise re the league) the matches against the others … the PNE match is interesting. Actually they have slipped a tad of late.

  31. Plug,

Sorry to be awkward, but it was in fact in the 63rd minute (30 minutes to go) when the Jedi came on that Villa took over the match.

And we did hit the bar twice – one of which should definitely have been in the back of the net.

I thought Villa looked pretty strong when the Jedi came on, and it helped Whelan too, I think.

  32. JL

I disagree. Jedi stabilised the situation. It was only when Davis was introduced that we started to look a threat up front with 2 strikers.

It was obvious to me at half time that a 0-0 was too risky and if anyone was likely to score it wasn’t us. It was even more apparent after Jota broke through. Had he scored that sitter we were done for. But subs don’t happen with Spud until the hour mark so we remained unnecessarily at risk.

  33. I think Villa’s last 30mins were more due to Snodgrass being useless. It was like having an extra man with Jedi. Then Davis is amazing holding up the ball and running with it.

I agree with Plug that we were lucky to survive the 15mins after 1/2 time. Cant understand why other managers can fire up their teams ans SB teams come out punch drunk…….actually I’ll change that….if I had to listen to a SB team talk I’d also run out depressed.

  34. VillaMD,

Yes, I agree Villa could have easily thrown the game away in that first 15 minutes after h-t. But as soon as the Jedi came on (and Snoddy ent off) there was a big improvement in Villa and we were pressing forward.

Yes, Plug, it did improve further with Davis coming on, but the Jedi entrance was the main turning point.

  35. Here’s my take – First half – typical derby caginess from both sides, with Small Heath looking more like they were trying because they had an out ball in Vassell. However our keeper was rarely troubled and we looked as though we were trying to snatch a 1 nil.

Second half and as with any home side, taking heart from their first half performance given where they are in the league and who they are playing and they came out firing. I’d suggest that Jedinak coming on for Snodgrass was too reactive to the half chances that Small Hearth made up to that point, that while we were never in control, we weren’t being dominated. Yes it reduced their chances but equally Snodgrass could have found his feet and contributed more in the final third. Onomah for Davis was a more obvious substitution than Hourihane as Hourihane is our dead ball specialist and could have supplied Davis as we had already shored up midfield with 2 defensive minded players in Jedinak and Whelan.

Fair result, not beaten but again never trying to dominate the game.

  36. Darren: “Fair result, not beaten but again never trying to dominate the game.”

Fair point, but for me it’s the players that seem to have lacked something for a chunk in the middle of the game. But that lack got switched off when the Jedi and then Davis appeared. Then we seemed to have ‘push’.

Maybe we’re still short of enough players with ‘push’?

Agreed on the subs though. Conor seemed to have got lost a bit but he is definitely better than others on dead balls.

  37. Well,

I have now a few moments to comment, as this weekend has been a great weekend for me, apart from the poor effort put out by Mr Bruce and his team of old carthorses…..

I knew from the moment you listen to Bruce being interviewed, here is a man incapable of inspiring a team to win, which really is amazing when you realise that he was one of Alex Ferguson’s major players.

The problem is that he has never got beyond Ferguson’s mantra for defence, and realised that the winning formula is in your forward play, AND CONVICING YOUR PLAYERS THAT THEY CAN BEAT THE OPPOSITION…!!

Bruce gives the impression that he has no real plan, and his team will only give of their best and HOPE TO BEAT THE OPPOSTION..!

This mentality does not win matches, because it does not inspire players, and they fail to find the clinical edge to

This mentality does not win matches, because it does not inspire players, and they fail to find the clinical edge to win matches.

I very much have my doubts about the PNE game, as they were very unlucky against Wolves, and should have won.

Villa will be very lucky to come away with a draw, unless Bruce changes the mindset.

I do appreciate that we did not lose, but we were very lucky, and a lot was down to the skills of Johnstone, and some last ditch efforts, and again Hutton’s tackling.

We were better after Jedinak and Davis came on, but we failed to live up to Fergie time and the last minute killer goal….When Bruce can produce that, then I will believe in him as a manger…!!

Three points for my birthday was the only acceptable result Mr Bruce…!!!

  39. 7am . wizza picked me . landed at pub around 7-30ish
1st half saw kickoff then downed around 7 ciders and 1 sambucca (someones Birthday)
2nd half , preety much the same as first but 3 jaeggerbombs and 2 sambuccas (someone elses birthday ) and a John Smiths for Steamer (Gary )
Home 8-30 to a slow cooked stew and spent 30 mins trying to find the dumplins only to find out the bloody wife forgot to put them , honestly l ask for one thing !!!!

my look on the game ………Pass
talked into going to preston ,
l really need a month off the drink methinks
    have a good week all

  40. Thanks guys…..!!!!

Great to hear from you ST75 and JG…..must meet up with you both at one of the matches and share a jar or two..!!

Gary will be pleased to know we are still trying to keep his memory alive…..all we need now is a few wise words from Jenny….XXXX

  41. Paul,

I don;t disagree that Preston could be a difficult one, but they did lose at home on Saturday, to Brentford.

In fact they’ve not won in their last 4.

    I know … they’ll win vs Villa!

But with the Jedi in I somehow don’t think so.

  42. jl
you cannot compare results with last 5 years,we are playing in lower league yet we have spent more than any other club at this level in fees and wages, yet we produce garbage performances week after week, this great run you mention, if you included cup match we failed to score in 5 matches and it took a penalty v worst side in this league bolton,a derby day draw away is usually a good result but we are playing catch up after bad start, and going back to great run we are still only 6 points clear of brentford in 18th place,
so i can see why bruce is still under big pressure

  43. All I can say is that I hope he accidentally gets it right against Preston.
He should have brought Davis on earlier, as he’s the only one who holds the ball up so Houlihane & Onomah can support.
Onomah is no 2nd striker, but O’hare can do it, as can Grealish when he’s match fit & up to speed [which he isn’t].
Added to that, O’hare has that rare quality of being a complete nuisance.
I think it will help that Kodja isn’t fit, as one more of the youngsters may get on the bench.
I can understand the viking being on the bench as he’s a left sided player & cover.
I feel sorry for Hogan, as he’s never had much of a chance to get going since he got here, & he doesn’t take the piss.
There needs to be cover for the right side if Snodgrass is out of sorts, but Bruce will bring in Lansbury on the bench instead of Blackett Taylor.
I’m surprised he hasn’t put one of the goalkeepers on as centre forward, but then he’s got Samba.

  44. IanG
That’s right, bring on Samba. Pretty good comments there. I’d have hoped O’Hare would have had more chances than he’s had. We do need to get that go forward, right? Yes, Mr Bruce.

  45. Morning all, not going to comment any more on the game as I have already done that to a resulting crescendo of silence.

Still struggle to figure out why so many comments condemning SB? We all know that things aren’t exactly as we would want them and we would all love to see Brazil style football and more attacking play BUT – as JL said, this is the best run in a number of years, we would seem to be getting difficult to beat and when the strikers are fit, we could see some more in the way of goal threat. Remember we did hit the bar twice on Saturday and had other chances ……. as the scum did as well so it could easily have been 3-2 to the Villa ……..

SB has a job to do and that is to get us promoted. At the moment we are on track for the play-offs – with a few more wins and less draws, that can be converted into an automatic promotion place. Yep it could all go belly up and we have a dire run and slide down the table, but I don’t think so.
So forget all the stats as one injury can put paid to those ……. we ARE on track for the minimum of a play- off place. If this was 20 years ago, all supporters would be pushing the team up the table with half full glasses and not half empty ones.

Oh and I just noticed that the thread title is Small HeaLth vs Aston Villa ……… 🙂
Yours not needing my depression pills back just yet,
    oldvilla

  46. IanG,

As I read it Bruce is concerned that Davis doesn’t burn out. He’s a strong player certainly, and I suspect he will start against PNE, and would have anyway (I think) if Codger wasn’t injured, but he is still only 19 and has had to take a lot of knocks.

As for O’Hare, Bruce has already praised him and we’ve seen him make some inroads into the first team squad.

Surely it’s a question of timing. If you try to keep an unchanged side, people criticise. If you keep changing the side, people will criticise! Unless you’re winning of course. Oh, wait, we have only lost 1 in 11 and 6 have been wins.

James – it’s 4 games in the past 11 *league* games we’ve failed to score, and in 2 matches we’ve scored 4. 17 goals i 11 matches scored is a little over 1.5 goals a match. That’s not too bad, and similar to what the other top clubs are doing.

And as for our progress rate not counting versus the last 5 years… Hasn’t it occurred to you that some progress is better than no progress? Isn’t it better that we should be going upwards and not downwards? Don’t the fans feel better when they’ve seen a win?

As for not beating Small Heath of course it’s a wrench that we’ve not beaten them (this time) but in the overall scheme of things it’s OK in my view. We didn’t lose and but for a couple of players being below par we would probably have won it.

    Anyway, PNE up next… UTV!

  47. jl
5 games in which we havent scored from play ,we needed a penalty v bolton,
and its only 4points from 9 now from teams around us plus the derby you can dress it up to suit you same as i can show facts the other way

  48. OV
Glad to hear you’ve been doing well without the anti-depressants.
JL-It, as you say, is just a matter of timing. Let’s hope SB gets that right more often. I’m looking forward to a win against Preston.
BTW, the book arrived. It is a very nice looking book. I will start reading it tomorrow. Just browsing through it, it looks like a good read.

  49. James: “you can dress it up to suit you same as i can show facts the other way”

Absolutely! But why you should wish to take it that way I don’t know! 🙂 The fact is that there is an improvement and we’re slowly making progress – as I see it anyway.

  50. JL & JG – our position in the table doesn’t lie ………… it’s obvious that there is improvement when compared to last season, when everyone was talking about relegation on this blog! Progress is being made most definitely …….. and long may it continue …

Iana – Thanks for your kind words and I concur with your views on JL’s book – it is a very interesting and well written read that all Villa supporters will certainly enjoy.
    oldvilla

  51. OV/JL
I am pointing out a tendancy that Bruce has to be over cautious.
Sorry if it doesn’t agree with your own tendancies, but it’s not negative but a critique of aspects of what we see.
The defensive mindset he has works for him & against him, & for & against us, the villa.
I am highlighting what I think could be improved.
If it’s the black humour way I do it that sets you off then hard luck it’s now your judgmental tendancies.

  52. JL,

Postal system works extremely well, as I got my signed copy, an unexpected extra, in time for my birthday.

I am very disappointed to see that Isaac Vassell has a serious cruciate ligament injury and will be out for months. He had been very impressive up until the moment of his injury, Blue Nose player or not. He is a young Brummie with great potential. Just a great pity he is not in Claret & Blue.

    JL,

Yes, we are in a better place, and hopefully we will push on to better things……..to use the sort of words that Bruce does……
Never a statement of intent that we can….and we will….lack of demand…lack of true positivity

“Faint heart never won fair lady…..and hope never wins the league. Planning and preparation, coupled with the will to win does….

Johnson and Robinson will be dying to prove themselves tomorrow night!!! along with at least another 11 players…!!

  53. This could be called the shoulda, coulda, woulda blog. All the ifs and buts mean nothing
20/20 hindsite is a marvellous skill. Easy to learn and totally correct. Bruce is a conservative guy. This personna has worked for him and he’s unlikely to change just to appease fans. But it has become too predictable and opposition teams have an advantage in preparing for games. He rarely sets up in an attacking formation and has attacking talent up to his eyeballs.
The run of games has been commendable but hasn’t lifted the worry of sliding back. I feel that confidence is growing but is still fragile. A killer instinct isn’t there yet.
No points for posts and bars, this isn’t horse shoes we’re playing.

  54. But we’ve still only lost 1 in 11 and have averaged 1.5 goals per game, like the others. 😀

And Bruce is conservative? And not getting anywhere quickly enough?

I’d say he’s doing what his boss asked him to do, and I bet that their researches told them he was “conservative”.

Having said that, I’d love to see a team of the kind that wallopped Pool 5-1 in ’76.

  55. JL I agree with your thoughts on what Xia wanted.
So we’ve scored an average of 1.5 like the others? that makes every weekend a crap shoot so a more attack minded set up is needed.
If you like high scoring games you should watch basketball—hahaha—not my favourite by miles

  56. Ian
Yes we know what we’ve got, but I’m not a prisoner of it.
Yes we’re well behind the 2 point a game, & every game is a crap shoot because as you say attack is the best form of defence [at the right time], but the defence has to know this at the same time & move up.
As I’ve posted before there is a built in hesitancy which gets exploited, then we have to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
It’s inevitable that it won’t work every time.
I’m never going to be a prozac supporter, & never have been.
Everyone’s welcome to their opinion, but I remember the words of the Dylan song, something about smiling while they kill.
There’s something inherently negative about insisting that everything has to be positive, cos along with negatively positive there’s positively negative.
