After hearing the news that former Portugal international Eusebio had passed away, I thought it right to honour a humble man who took the world by storm.

Born in Mozambique, Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was born into a poor neighbourhood, playing football with whatever he could, barefoot, testament to a boy who loved the game dearly.

His greatest moment in the game is often overshadowed in this country by England’s win in 1966, but he scored nine goals and won the coveted Bronze Ball award, putting four goals past North Korea.

Following a career mostly spent with Benfica, Eusebio was a keen ambassador of the game, praised for his humility and fair play.

So, as time is called on a legend, we say thank you Eusebio for the football – you truly were one of the very best of all time.
