As we go into 2014, it is time to look back at the past 12 months. In 2013, we saw a rise from troubles that occurred in Christmas 2012, and finished the season strongly. Quite how we might look at the season overall is dependent on the personal view.

For some, 2014 will signal the next steps in a long process, one that is unlikely to be finished any time soon. For others, the vision may well be a little more bleak as poor style football combined with poor form has meant lots of upset and anger.

Whatever happens this year, Villa will be sure to anger, excite and frustrate us in equal measure. In our own eyes, it may well seem like we are unique, like we are the only ones undulating from bad to good, or the only ones who are suffering with going backwards.

The reality is that if you support any club, things are always going to be variable – the only difference is going to be whether you are competing for top four, top six, top half, or to survive.

We’ll find out soon enough if Villa are to go up or down in the league table though the Sunderland game is likely to provide no real information on which direction we ultimately end up.

So, as 2014 is upon us, I’ll wish you all the very best in the new year – here’s to good health, good friendship and good fortune on the pitch.
