For the average person, the amount of money that footballers earn is inconceivable. Many of us could only begin to imagine what we would spend it on, be it for noble deeds such as funding charities or the more indulgent activity such as playing poker.

So how do footballers spend their money? Many have decided to invest in remarkable things, such as funding health and education programs and using their salaries to make a change in the world. Others choose to spend their money on more decadent materialistic items such as starting their own private car collection. We’re not here to judge, because we can barely imagine what it’s like to make that much for a living, but here are some more of the financially irresponsible things that footballers have chosen to spend their money on.

Cristiano Ronaldo is rolling in it, being one of the world’s most recognised names. He reportedly makes $40 million a year, including endorsements. £80,000 of that a month is spent on clothes. That one be one large wardrobe. Many footballers purchase the obvious clothes, cars and houses, but what about the others?

Mario Balotelli is no stranger to the lime light and is often reported to be causing some public hype or doing some crazy act wherever he goes. Last year, Balotelli reportedly gave a homeless man £1000 in celebration after having won £25,000 at a casino. He also supposedly walked into a pub at Christmas time and opened a £1000 bar tab for the locals. This is only the start of his infamous antics.

At least Balotelli’s antics are centred on sharing his money publicly, even if it does mean that he faces fines for his crazy behaviour from his managers. Perhaps a more troublesome player is Dietmar Hamann who reportedly spent a lot of his salary on his gambling problem. He explained recently how he once managed to blow £200,000 in just one night at the casino.

However footballers decide to spend their money, there’s certainly no question that the size of the salary allows for some wild, wonderful and reckless antics.
