As many of you are already now aware, Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia. Stan reportedly developed a fever shortly after the Arsenal game and hospital tests revealed the condition.

Aston Villa have moved quickly to release a statement regarding Petrov’s health stating “We expect to learn more on Stiliyan’s situation in due course and have moved quickly to support him and his family.”

During this time we ask that Stiliyan’s privacy is placed ahead of all inquiries and trust that we will share information as we receive it.”

“Stiliyan is cherished by many and will get from Villa every ounce of support and love we have to help bring this to a positive conclusion.”

Celtic boss Neil Lennon, himself a former team mate of Petrov under former Villa manager Martin O’Neill added: “We are all absolutely devastated to hear this news.”

“As a member of the Celtic family, it is important for Stiliyan to know he has our unequivocal support in battling this disease.”

“On behalf of the players and backroom staff, we send our support and best wishes to Stiliyan, Paulina and the family. We are there for them and they will never walk alone.”

Obviously such an announcement has taken us all by surprise. Stan, a consistently committed player for the cause, has always displayed a very high level of physical effort whilst taking his role as Aston Villa captain. As a well loved and respect Villa player, we obviously offer our thoughts and prayers to Stan and his family, and hope for news of a positive treatment for the captain’s current condition.

Any fans wishing to send their regards are able to do so in the comments sections below. I have seen that people already have stated some in the earlier piece, but I will ensure that these well wishes are forwarded directly to the club, and thus to the player himself, his wife Paulina, and sons Stiliyan junior and Christian.

United behind our Captain.
