Whatever happened to all the heroes?
All the Shakespearoes?
They watched their Rome burn
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?

Says it all really.

There was a time you looked at the Villa team sheet and found it hard to pick your favourite: Dwight Yorke, Paul McGrath, Ian Taylor, Dalian Atkinson, John Carew, Martin Laursen, Ashley Young, Alan Wright. Go back in time further, every team had one or two favourites. Heroes of the Club.

Even when the Villa team have struggled there have always been one or two players with a real connection with the fans—someone we sing the name of and they can step up and inspire. But who do we have now? Who is that established player we as fans turn to?

Where have they been for the last 12-18 months? There is simply no real connection between the fans and the players.

Big Ron Vlaar has the potential with a name like Concrete, but we can’t give him that status until he’s shown us he can do it. Darren Bent barely manages to inspire himself never mind his team mates (jibe at Captain Role), so you can forget the fans. Makoun had the makings, and got off to a good start with his jumpers, but that has ended in tears.

That’s all there is to be said about it really. So what is there to be done about it?

I think this connection between fans and players means a lot. If the connection is there do you not think they’ll fight that little bit harder for the team?

Who do you think can be a hero in the stands?

And if we could clone one of Villa’s past Fan Favourites, which one would best improve this team? Dwight Yorke and his creativity? Ian Taylor with his energy and drive?

There is going to be a lot said about tactics, transfers, etc. over the next week. So let’s just change it up a bit. What do you think? Or do you happen to think football has now becomes too plastic and that connection we once had as fans has gone forever? Is it that it’s not the players that aren’t good enough, but simply the society we live in nowadays that is slowly destroying the soul in every club?

Short and sweet but something to think about. Where is our next hero coming from?
